crossbows

So after many years of fighting myself about getting a crossbow license the pain in the shoulder has got the best of me. I went to the doctor got the paper work done and have been approved.

So now the decision on a crossbow
Im not looking to spend $1500-2000 on a crossbow

Anyone has used any for hunting?
Brands and thoughts/good vs bad

Any input will be appreciated

Don't need a license for a cross bow.
Excalibur is brand I'd get.
Grizzly model is great and will fill all your hunting and traget needs. Think there 540 brand new with four bolts.
I'd get the cocking aid. And extra string and a six pack of arrows and broad heads. Even with the extras you will be under 1000

I will second the Excalibur vote. Been running with their products for many years. They are very simple and easy to work on, and despite having the best warranty in the business, they are damn near bulletproof. I have killed literally dozens of critters with mine.

Depends on what & where you are hunting as to which model to look at.
My current (and likely last bow I will ever need) is one of their Matrix 380's. It has been discontinued, but looking around you'll find one for a reasonable price. Picked one up with all the bells & whistles for a buddy at 750 clams just a short spell ago.

I have a permanent crossbow permit for Alberta myself (due to a rather bad shoulder).
Over there, as here, the 380 Matrix SHINES!!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, and I am always open for a pm chat as well.

Cheers & Good Luck with your selection!
Matt

I have had experience with crossbows for several years but have only had three. One was the Excalibur Phoenix. It was not very accurate but sufficient. Then three years ago I got the Excalibur 380 Matrix and I really like it. It is 6 inches narrower than the previous & because I walk a lot in the bush that was important to me. It is as well very accurate. However you will not likely be able to caulk it with the rope. I had to buy the winch caulker to do it but no big deal.
Usually can pick these up used for less than a grand plus the extras. You will as well need the special rope to pull the limbs back to adjust the string tension as it needs to be in a specific spot & readjust every so often. As well you should carry extra stings with you. The 380 comes with a dry fire preventer. I hated it so a couple of screws & off it came. I as well did not like my quiver mounted on the bow so I carry it in my backpack. It takes a few yrs to figure it all out.

I own the Excalibur Micro. I absolutely love it. Bombproof, small, and lethal. It will put down the largest game animals no problem. Deadly accurate, every time I take it out for practice before hunting season, I take 3 shots, then put it away it's so accurate. The reason why I chose a recurve Xbow is the fact that if your string breaks, no prob...you can change it in the field. Also seen a video of a truck running over one as well as one falling from a treestand. Very hard to hurt them. I bought the loader as I cannot pull the string back. You will also need to buy a special xbow target as this thing will destroy normal archery butts. I will have this xbow for the rest of my life and will pass it down the family.

Not sure if you use Facebook, but there is several archery classified groups. This Excaliber 355 is for sale and looks like the guy is in Edmonton (I do not know this person)

That's what I was talking about! Totally accurate. What type of scope is that you have? My husband and I are trying to find a spot to practice those long shots.

I run an after-market Hawke XB-30 Compact. Unfortunately discontinued.
Decent glass with chevrons reaching out to 100 yards, a range I commonly practice at.

My partner has one of the Bulldog 400's like the one CNP posted.
It is a good bow if you like the bulldog design (I don't, he does).
I put one of the new Tact-100 Excalibur scopes on it, and am very pleased with it too.
Suggest that is the way to go if you want the capability of accurate long range target shooting from your crossbow.

Cheers,
Nog

Another thumbs-up for the Excalibur crossbows.

My sister was the one who introduced me to them, and I have to say, they make an exceptional product.

First of all I would consider features like physical weight, axle to axle width, and maybe...FPS. However it depends on what are you going to hunt. A deer can be shot within 20 yards velocity isn't a biggie here. It's also a drawback since higher FPS crossbows produce much noise. I prefer to stay under 400 FPS to keep noise down.

There are many entry-level crossbows that can work great when hunting https://wildproofgear.com/best-hunti...ows-under-400/

Ofc, you can also look for overall quality and reasonable prices by comparing features of x-bows in the same price range.
