Boating license for a 5 horse trolling motor.
 

Like the title says, do I need a boaters license to run a 5 horse trolling motor, thanks Jeff.

NO over 12ft. and 10 HP requires a boaters licednse

So what about a 14 foot aluminum with the 5 horse trolling motor?

A. All operators of powered watercraft used for recreational purposes within Canada require the card as of September 15 2009.

As of September 15, 2009 all boaters are required to have the Pleasure Craft Operator Card in order to operate a powered watercraft. Apparently this is not the case ... it has a motor you need the class.

I agree and in addition, if it is over 12' and 10 hp motor is the Federal registering criteria?

I assumed he meant an operators card. Not to register his boat since he was more interested in the size of the motor. Guess we need clarification.

No if it has a motor you need an operators card.

Take the test, get the licence, put it away, does not expire, one time deal and the possible headache will never surface if asked to produce the card while operating your boat!

Go get the license, if you don't it could wreck a good day of fishing!
Has anyone been asked for it when stopped by the co's? I been and never been asked

I was asked for and had everything on the boat inspected. Make sure I had a throw line, whistle, life jackets boaters license the whole deal including bail bucket.

That being said he did have a trainee with him and was showing him the proper way to inspect the boater and his boat. Friendly guy so it was no big deal as I had everything on board that is required.

I guess it depends when and where you've been fishing. We've been checked multiple times in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Any time we have a watercraft and been fishing, the CO has always asked. All three of us have had ours right from the beginning, with out tests taken at the local Sportsman Show in Edmonton.

I been stopped and handed it to the co a long with my fishing license and he said keep it they don't care about it. Next time I just waited to be asked for it and never did.

Have been check a few times in Alberta only asked once for it

Asked every time in BC

Currently, a Pleasure Craft Operator Card is not required in order to operate a rented watercraft. Instead, it is sufficient for a renter to complete a rental safety checklist. Take note however that some companies have made it their corporate policy to require renters to have their Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Then he has a legit rental business...generates revenue etc ....opening another can of worms for not wanting to get a operators licence, going down a slippery road of lies and deceit will bury you all so quickly and bring down others with you...not cool.:(

As others have already stated no matter what shape or form of boat if it has a motor, gas or electric then you must have a pleasure craft operators license. This includes inflatable pontoons, kayaks, tinners, canoes etc.

If your boat has a 10 HP or larger motor then the boat requires a pleasure craft license. This is a completely different license that is more akin to a license plate(you get paperwork and have to put stickers on boat). If you are in such a situation just do it, it is free an easy...
