The 3 Shot 5 Gallon Pale Challange

Calling on all 94.36% of lousy Shooters out there.

The time has come to finish off the left over game Harvesting ammo from the 2017 year end.

The challange is to kneel down with rifle & cartrage of your choice at 200 yards or metres and shot at a 5 gallon pale.

5 gallon USA pale at 200 yards.
23 Litre pale at 200 meters since its metric. Oh Boy.

The trick is to hit the pale, yes I know that this is going to hard to do with winter mittys and toque, but hey,,, that's just part of being Canadian.

Here's the kinda guide lines.
The pale has to be a pale, you can shot it standing up or pale laying down.
If you want to punch the holes threw the top or bottom, that's OK to.
A real light scuff off the edge of the pale is classed as a 1/2 hit. LOL

The pale can be plastic or metal, new or old, with or with out a handle, and can be any colour you want.
You can either tape a target onto the pale or paint it at your choosing.

Once the 3 shots are fired at it, the shooter is not allowed to take any more shoots at it. If it is going to be used again,,, the pale has to be fully rapped with a replacement cover for the next 3 shots.

Sorry folks, that how this challange works
Ha.

Those that have picture hosting are welcome to put them up and describe the all.

Day, year, temp, range, general out doors, winds, elevation, time of day, rifle, optics, caliber, bullets used. Kneeling free hand or sling, technique used to hit the pale, winter gear your wearing, group shot before or after coffee, and what rusty truck took you to and from the shooting set-up.
No shooting sticks or bypods allowed,,, only kneeling, hand and sling with no other supports touching the rifle, or leaning / resting body on anything either.

If you wish to add extras over and above this list, then by all means since I know a few of you use Ox & Cart at this time of year, I'm getting to this challange on my Mule name Hous,,, he has soft ears. Ha.

So all 94.36% of shooters including me that hasn't done a kneeling shot in 14 or 18 years are allowed to freely join in on the 3 Shot 5 Gallon Pale Challange.

If your in the above 94.36%, then you loose a 1/2 point due to higher skill levels,,, that way it evens out the playing field. Kinda like us 94.36% of folks come to the race track with a Ford Pinto knowing that we're up against a 1000 hp Mustang. LOL

Good luck everyone,,, I'll post this weekend coming up.
I share a little trick I learned in free hand iron silhouette match from years gone by. Oldtimers like K Jackson & R Hutchison trained us well back then.

Don

PS:
Basically shooting while kneeling off the frozen ground with support from what our bodies offer. Those that can't kneel can only shoot with 1 hand, those with more challanges above this can find another option that makes it fair for everyone.

Options might be an extra 100 meters / yards, shooting up side down like the one PRS challange, maybe shooting a coffee can instead.
So long as one feels that it adds a bit more of a challange.

Don't forget to document the size of the groups.
Remember, this is a fun shot, and a person can post as many attempt as they want threw out the year.
My first attempt will be the craps, once I do it a few time, I'm sure it will all come back.

elkhunter11 12-04-2017 11:25 PM

The biggest challenge will be finding a "pale".:)

YoteStopper 12-04-2017 11:44 PM

Does he mean a pail? A 5gal pail is a massive target, mind you it would look pretty small at 1000 meters.

Don_Parsons 12-05-2017 05:29 AM

Yes my bad.

Let's go with this pail instead being pale, auto correct doesn't allow it to be changed.

That's ok since it shows I'm in the "bellow 94.36% average. LOL.
Glad I get a few days to practic my free hand kneeling position, here's a link of the 3 positions.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_positions
Kneeling is the one we're after, but there is nothing wrong going over and above if a person chooses to go at it standing.
The last standing groups I shot before we shut-down our public range was almost 30 + some odd years ago,.a few local Full Bore shooters in the area had the 3 posted down pat.
Terry R and C Ganter along with 7 others were pretty crafty at this, the Southern Alberta crew also had some world class shooters in this mix.

Like my friend C Ganter would say,,, find the most comfortable kneeling position you can be in.
Flop down and get solid to the ground just like a rock.

Part of the body becomes a solid anchor off the ground, the rest is up to the shooter to find his or her technique.
It's been a long time since I've tried this.

At least I had a go at it in the gopher patch this year. I'm kinda lousy at it, but what the heck.

Nothing like freshen up the skills once in a while.

Pail head Don

PS: YES... the pail is a big target at the 200 ish mark for the above 94.36% of high skill level shooters,,, but those of us below that average will struggle.

Those above average folks are free to take a 1/2 point off at their choosing, or take the full point if they like. LOL.

It's all about fun and good times my friends.
My plan is to pull off a few of them this year, along with standing,,, it kinda brakes up the routine of just doing one thing.

Dick284 12-05-2017 05:43 AM

Don.

Don't try so hard my friend, roll with it, and enjoy the ride.

A metaphor shouldn't be taken so literally.

58thecat 12-05-2017 05:49 AM

Man toooooo many rules so I will keep it simple, weather permitting I will walk out three 4 litre milk jugs to 200 yards...shoot them at 50 yards take a picture....walk out to 200 yards and lay down covering fire...post up my results and go from there.

Don_Parsons 12-05-2017 06:21 AM

I'll try my best to not over think it. LOL.

What a great way to practic the old skills from long ago,,, for those that choose to that is.
Perhaps it is things like this that brought me back into shooting sports.

My pals and I built lots of iron silhouettes back in the day, we'd drag them out West and plink away for days, weeks, and months.
We got into the 4" balloon stuff that fall at 500 yards "pron" with bypods,,, it was practicing skills for Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep back then.

Any ways, some days things worked out good, other days not so much. The weather beat us up pretty bad a few times,,, high winds, cold frozen rains, and the odd early fall winter snow storms along the Eastern Slopes of Alberta and British Columbia. LOL.
And this was before the Sheep harvest.

I did ok at this, but my Harvesting partner had it mastered, he could plow threw that snow all day and put the drop on any thing he want,,, he use to say he was the craps at this free hand stuff,,, our other friend Harold was the real deal when it come to free hand critter getting. Dam he was smoooooth with steady hands.

Some folks just have it I guess, but I never turn down practicing wizer shooting skills when the opportunity comes.

Variety as I like to call it, the something to do.
One never knows if something like this will improve the game Harvesting skills later on down the road.
I know I could benefit from trying this.

That's the fun part in it for me.

Can't we just use a pie plate? They seem to be like a bullet magnet anyway...... :sHa_sarcasticlol:

marxman 12-05-2017 08:13 AM

I cant hit anything kneeling my knee acts like a fulcrum to pivot the rifle around. Some people seem to think this is really easy but im pretty sure a pail is not too big for them to shoot around

This thread could be a ban magnet:)

Bushrat 12-05-2017 10:17 AM

Don, I need clarification on the rules, can I only fire 3 shots, or can I keep shooting until I hit the pail 3 times. Just curious, it might take me a while and several trips to the store for more ammo. Also is this something like a ladder test with a pail as a substitute? How do you interpret the results. A pail makes sense to me, at least I should be able to tell when I've hit it. I could never makes sense of the ladder test, there are too many openings in a ladder and I can't tell if I'm hitting them or not.

Don_Parsons 12-05-2017 11:21 AM

Oh boy oh Boy.

Ok, we can change the challange as we go.
We can put the pail on the ground or stool including a step ladder.
Yes,,, we can shot a ladder / or the ladder if that works. LOL.
This is not saying we can't hang the pail from our barbed wire fence so it moves around when the winds pick-up, nothing like shooting a moving pail.

The nice thing about a pail is we can set in on a long sloped hill and shot at it once we get it rolling down the hill.

No pie plates allowed in this challange unless it's turned into a pail by twisting, folding and bending the edges to fashion it a pail,,, it might be pretty small, but the above 94.36% should be OK taking that on,,, perhaps we can add a 1/2 point for miniature pails less than 5 gallons. LOL.

Yes, the pail can be used next time so long as it gets covered.

No, only 3 bullets allowed at the shooting platform. That way it is fair for everyone.

I'll bet my first attempt will be a miss right of the bat. LOL, or a light scuff if I'm lucky.

My first kick at the pail will be my plinking rifle and cartrage in a snow storm with 100 mpr winds.
That way I won't feel bad if I end up with 3 consecutive misses.

I'll make sure I have my tin-foil hat sucked down tight. Ha

Is the cardio before the shot optional?

Or does that mean I can drop down to 100 yards?

Dick284 12-05-2017 12:57 PM

This challenge pales in comparison to some we've seen in the past.:sHa_sarcasticlol:

The Flint&Fly Guy 12-05-2017 01:06 PM

While this challenge may not be as super difficult as "some in the past", it's the current one, easy enough I (and anyone that try's) should get it eventually, and just sounds like fun! I hope to try it out this Friday

purgatory.sv 12-05-2017 01:44 PM

Thank you it has been added to my many challenges!

Don_Parsons 12-05-2017 01:52 PM

Yes, something to do is better than nothing at all.
I'm thinking that 200 meters is a good place to start, once a person masters that, then move to pail out further... After rapping a new cover over it.

Just like the one post mentioned,,, keep going out as far as one can go even if it is to the 1000 yard mark and beyond.
I know I'd be challanged to get 3 into the draw works of a 23 Liter pail at 200 meters starting off since my tac shooting skills have fallen by the weigh side.

That is why I capped my critter harvest off this year at 140 yards by hand,,, of coures the option to reach out there further was dependening on obstacles to shot off of.

Hopefully I'll benefit from this later on if I take a run at PRS shooting sports.
Nothing like coming to dinner with one's own knife and fork. LOL

Easier to see the holes in it against the snow.

Gotta love politics :fighting0074::scared0018:

Don_Parsons 12-05-2017 03:11 PM

LOL, I like that.

( PRS) Pail Rodeo Shooting. Maybe we are starting a whole new shooting sport.

As I mentioned earlier, the challenge can advance as we go. Or at our choosing.

A fellow at work asked how come just kneeling, why not bring on all 3 shooting positions with 3 pails.

Free hand prone, kneeling, and standing, that way the shooters benefits across the whole Spectrum of shooting styles that would benefit a broader range of folks.

Dam, I never thought of that.

3 Pails, 3 shooting positions, 3 shots.

PRS Triple 3. LOL.

What the heck, why walk back and forth from a short volley of shots when we can make it worth our while.

It's funny that this challange came up, my old shooting friend give me a leather gun strap with a quick clamp and loop.
Then he handed me a button.

I was stumped,,, what would this button button be for, I went to hand it back to him and he said

"No, keep it. You'll need it."

He took the button and grabbed my armed.
"This button needs to get sewed right here on your jacket,,, it will become to permanent anchor point of the sling every time you shot free hand,,, prone, kneeling, standing.
The new shooting rifle sling is different then this, but many shooters today still use this system because it works."

I'll be darned, guess I'll get schooled this weekend on how this works. Ha.
Of course I'm going to start off with my Australia Marksman rap around sling first and build off of that since its my go to unit when out West.

Keeping it the same across the board might be a good idea.

Don.

Dam this is going to be fun. Ye Ha

elkhunter11 12-05-2017 03:16 PM

I just have a feeling, that this isn't going to become as popular as you hope.:thinking-006::thinking-006:

gitrdun 12-05-2017 03:26 PM

Oh darn, I just had to delete my comments as promised to a Mod. :)

fallen1817 12-05-2017 04:01 PM

With all of the variations in the rules...

... Can I shoot a bucket suspended from a drone?

Don_Parsons 12-05-2017 04:18 PM

You don't have to delete anything my friend. It's all good.

It's a open forum of good times.
