Pronghorn Pics

We put on about 500 kms. so far this year in search of a true trophy Pronghorn and this is the best we could find. You guys that are going to get a tag are in for a real tough hunt. It is super dry out already with a fire restriction on, I'm sure a all out fire ban will be following soon. You'd be lucky if this little fella would even break the 13" mark.

ram crazy 08-11-2018 05:32 PM

Well we put on about 1000 kms so far this summer, and this is the best we could do. I'm not shatting you when I say the pronghorn hunters are in for a real treat this year. There is going to be a lot of tag soup unless you want to kill a little fella and even that will be a chore. This one will probably break the 13 1/2" mark.

Best one I saw today was this little guy

My son filles his tag last year. We spent a lot of time driving which produced a lot of animals but no crankers. After days on our feet finally took a hog. They r there. Good luck guys

Sakoman 08-11-2018 06:10 PM

I have an archery tag and the numbers are ok where I am hunting but not seeing anything real big.

cacty 08-12-2018 12:24 PM

Numbers are certainly down considering we had a decent winter in the south.

Lefty-Canuck 08-12-2018 05:48 PM

I’m not much of a goat hunter...any guesses on what the one I posted scores? My guess is 71-72”

Yea I'd say 70-71" hard to tell from pics. What zone you get drawn for.

nube 08-12-2018 06:31 PM

How are the antelope looking this year? I would think with the winters we have had it should be pretty good this year with some monsters running around

ram crazy 08-12-2018 07:23 PM

Very hard winter down here there was anywhere from 2-3' of snow and it stayed until late in April. Then there was flooding everywhere because it melted in 3 days. There isn't near the numbers or the quality of big pronghorns around this year like there was last year.

cacty 08-13-2018 09:54 AM

Numbers are way down from what I've seen so far.

bonedogg 08-13-2018 11:41 AM

I would consider the last two goats posted as good Alberta antelope. When you guys say the numbers are waaay down, do you mean in 102-118, or 150-152? I know there was a massive die-off in N/NE Montana this last year due to the snow and wonder if many of the migratory antelope that head down that far were affected. It's my understanding that not all of the Antelope migrate, depending on the year of course. thoughts?? I would assume that the antelope that wintered in the Suffield block or along the Red Deer River would have been ok?

my guess is closer to 75-76"

wbl170 08-13-2018 12:18 PM

I would say mid 70's as well. Good prongs but low.

Sledhead71 08-13-2018 01:36 PM

Hard to judge from picture, but 70 and change is my guess..

Lots of twins this spring and even triplets here, so population is growing.. Only know of one that would be a shooter, but really have not been looking.

All the best to those drawn for speeders....

Those prongs look good because he has no weight above or below the prong. This one here has I'm guessing 6 1/2" prongs

wbl170 08-14-2018 09:33 AM

I agree, they have good length but would you not miss a circumference measurement. And best of luck as well. They are fun to hunt and your in some great country!

cacty 08-14-2018 10:13 AM

74" No mass or length..great shovels though

Big healthy Pronghorn does produce big horned bucks.

Expect bumper crops of big horns based on the weather starting from the year the animal was conceived. In Alberta, it seems to take several easy years in a row before we see exceptional horn growth.

Bucks conceived from stressed does will almost always be on the smaller side, no matter how good their last winter was.

Thanks for the pics! Always great to see Pronghorns.

ram crazy 08-15-2018 06:14 AM

Here's a little better Pronghorn.

here is a decent one, needs some mass and length.

bowhunter9841 08-16-2018 01:07 PM

I would shoot any one of the bucks in these pictures without any hesitation. Especially considering I’ll be bowhunting! And it’s my first time hunting speed goats! I’ll be more picky in a few years when I draw my trophy tag!

dicknormal 08-16-2018 01:31 PM

Nothing spectacular in our travels

This is the biggest I’ve seen so far this year. My buddy got drawn, and unless we see something better, this one will be in trouble.

bessiedog 08-24-2018 04:01 PM

Dibs.!

I call dibs!

This is the best thread. I’m so pumped to get out to that country.

ram crazy 08-24-2018 10:29 PM

Here is a different angle of the last one I posted. Bessie I'll give you directions to this one. 😉
