Fishing for Suckers

I am looking to try my hand at catching some suckers this spring. Never tried it and know little about it. I heard that chain lakes might be a good spot, but never fished it before.

Any information on where I might have some luck, would be awesome.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers

Why though?

Couple reasons. I want to pass the time between last ice and start of fly fishing, and I heard people have pickled them with good success.

I've never targeted suckers but have landed a few dozen in my time. They were hitting spinners during the grayling run on the Kakisa a few years back. Heck of a fight on 6 LB test. :) If you haven't been to the NWT before, it would be a good excuse. An exotic sucker catching paradise! The falls are nice too. :)

There are 8 different species of Sucker in Alberta. Never understood the hate on for them! Nothing cooler than catching a species you haven't caught before and adding it to 'the list'

They are usually easy to catch. Gob of s on a pickerel rig. They are often a by catch when trout fishing. Slow water is good.

Suckers

Chain lakes is great for them, bait on the bottom.

The North Saskatchewan river has 5 species of suckers. The silver redhorse, shorthead redhorse, quillback, white and longnose sucker. so if you really want to target suckers this river might have the most variety. River-run suckers are strong fish. A 3 lb. redhorse or quillback are more fun than a 3 lb. trout.
