Drift boat repair?
 

Hey folks, I picked up an old drift boat today. It's an old girl but it is in pretty good shape for her age. I was just wondering if there is a product to put on the bottom of the boat to cover all the little nicks in the coating. There are no gouges or anything, just looks like air holes in a poorly done mudding job on drywall, if that makes sense? Or do I just leave it as is and run'ner?

Funny I'm just refurbishing a big fiberglass laker canoe. Going to Calgary industrial plastics is a good idea. If you just want to smooth the bottom nicely a good sanding with a good sander and proper sandpaper will be a good start. Then you can use "fairing putty to smooth out any deep gouges. Then some good paint and you're away. West systems makes good marine epoxy paint and it's expensive.

You also might have the option of adding a sheet of UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) plastic to the bottom. That stuff slides over rocks nicely I've heard. I haven't used it though so you'll have to research it yourself. It sounds like a great alternative though and if it wears through you can replace it.

You can get a graphite additive to add to West System Epoxy that would make the hull stronger. I would suggest that you call Don at Boatcraft in Edmonton. He's got tons of knowledge and they have a great line of boat repair/building materials.
