My 2014 Trapping journal

Figured I would run a journal this year and see if I can get some decent pics this year.

What a great looking camp that you have there, Nube! I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures from on your line this season.

nube 11-21-2014 09:49 PM

Well I just got back from my trapline. I set 22 boxes the first day and got about 9 the second part of the next day and then checked my first boxes I set out. I must admit I did not expect to catch anything and figured if I was lucky I would have 1. Well after doing a loop on those 22 boxes I had 7 marten in less than 24 hrs!! I am pretty excited about that. I took a bunch of pictures of some snared coyotes and my marten check but after reading what has been gone on while I was away I am not sure I dare post any pics up. Not sure what happened but it sounds like pictures just brings on grief these days

Torkdiesel 11-21-2014 10:05 PM

Sounds like you had a great start to the season Phil. Post all those pics, I'll be posting all mine this year as soon as I get this Muley and get out to the line.

I'll give you a shout tomorrow. Was on daddy daycare duty today with a sick 2 year old.

lilsundance 11-21-2014 10:17 PM

nice pics Nube. Go ahead and post more pics. Those who can't critic a pic without burning the poster had better read the rules again. It won't matter who they are or how long they have been on the board.

Good, I hope so.

Awesome catch, Nube! I hope that you have a great season on your new line. :)

Forgot to take a pic before I started getting him out.
Thanks for the comments guys.I do have a question and wanted to know if 7 out of 22 is a good sign there are strong numbers of Martens around? What is the average catch % you guys have on your lines? I also want to know what I should be watching for in your mind so I don't over harvest the area. As you can see I have more adults than Juvies on this catch. Thanks

357xp 11-22-2014 07:15 AM

7 out of 22 in 24 hours is very well. If the line hasn't been trapped in a few years you will be getting quite a few adults.

Torkdiesel 11-22-2014 07:59 AM

I would say not having been trapped in a few years is a understatement with those kinds of catch numbers. But with the warmer weather and snow coming they may have just been moving everywhere and luck was on your side.
I've never had catch numbers that high myself, I would say on average I start out in December at 20% and it tappers off to 7-10% by the end of Jan, and that's on a 5-7 day check.
Either way I think you're going to have a great season buddy 👍

Gabby61 11-22-2014 08:07 AM

Very nice

Nice pictures and great catch !!
I like your tapered boxes.
Do you like to pans better than the triggers ?

Gabby.

I love the pans guys. I tried vertical boxes as well as the horizontal ons. The vertical ones had a poor strike and one that I will not discuss on here that I was really not impressed with. From now on in the future all my traps will be pans on leaning trees. It does not take much time to find a leaning tree to put it on. A big thanks to a bunch of you guys on here and on Trapperman forum for helping me out with the pan thing. They are so simple to put on the traps and really ar the way to go.
I will be spending the summer making a pile of new boxes.

The one big thing I learned this time out is how much time it takes to put them up. I basically put them 500 yards apart as I got down the cutlines and it takes a long time just to get 30 of them out.

I also will mention that I used muskrat for bait. I had a bucket with some choped up beaver that I had thawed out and I marinated the muskrats in the beaver juice. At the site I woud cut the rat in half and smear the guts on the leaning poles up to the trap. Not sure if that helps but it gets the smell in the air real good.
Half the traps I used a homemade skunk lure and got 3 marten on it and the other 4 marten came from Hawbakers lure. I don't think either is better than the other. 3 of my Marten were caught within600 yards of eachother so the one spot may just be a hotspot. It will be iteresting to see what is going on when I get back to check.

Thanks for putting up all the pics. Looks real great.

Torkdiesel 11-22-2014 09:58 AM

The leaning tree set I'm sure is the most popular. Sorry you didn't like the results on your vertical box. I run vertical boxes almost exclusively now (prob 95%) after catching 40 or so whiskey jacks one year in the horizontal sets. Not sure why they kept going in them, maybe they had been eating out of boxes where the marten was already caught.
I wasn't really interested in continuing to kill all my little friends that keep me company out there.

Looking forward to following you through the season Nube. I'd love to do that, but just don't have the resources. I target coyotes though, and have 25 in the fur shed so far. Best of luck to you. Keep up with the pics.

I use vertical boxes as well and have had really good luck with humane strikes, i set my traps fairly deep in the box so when the trap fires the trap kinda launches onto the marten almost always a suitcase type catch.

Toe823 11-22-2014 10:07 AM

Awesome pics Nube....what a start to your new line....congrats!! The only thing I would be careful with is letting your Marten hang that close to the ground if you are going to leave them for a few days....you will have predators and varmints chewing on them.. I can't wait to get out on the line!!!!!!!
Toe

nube 11-22-2014 10:08 AM

Thanks Toe. Any added deas are most welcome. Sometimes it is hard to get them higher off the ground. Maybe another plus for Vertical boxes you can hang them higher that way.

can u guys send me some specs for your boxes please.
