My factory hunting rifle shoots under .75" all day, Really, Prove it!
This CHALLENGE for the shooters not prepared to attempt either of the 1/2" Challenges. The Rules are the Rules. No whining or complaining.
THE RULES - Rifles are restricted to unmodified factory rifles with muzzle diameters under .75" (No heavy barreled varmint rigs) - No modifications to stock, trigger, etc. No aftermarket stocks or barrels. - No rest restrictions, so from lead sled to off-hand. - To post, must show five consecutive groups of three shots in each group--- on one target panel... with no group exceeding .75" measured C to C. Five groups only, not best five out of seven. - Target distance must be 100M, but 100 yds is OK for shooters not into metric. - Must post target picture showing all five groups under 0.75" with calipers showing measurment over the largest group. Write the size of each group under the group. Provide the five group average. No coins or other items which could hide a flier. - Successful challengers must post a picture of the groups and the rifle as shot, including rest...bags...fence post... NOTE: There are no caliber or bullet restrictions. High end factory rifles including Cooper, HS Precision are permitted. Shooting can take place during legal hunting hours and at any temperature to simulate real world conditions:) |
I'm out, all my factory rifles are bedded, and have the triggers tweaked.

Good point Dick Tweaking factory triggers OK as long as it is only for pull weight, creep, and overtravel. No new trigger parts. Glass bedding OK (some factory rifles Browning are bedded so this change will even the requirements.) But, no after factory pillars installed. |
Well then, here's hoping for this weekend
|
Well, I think my rifle could do it, but I'm also pretty confident that I personally couldn't do it. :) I have a Remington 700, Boone & Crockett edition (laminate, with fluted barrel), bedded and trigger tuned at Corlanes, chambered in 7mm08. I shot this 5 round group at Wapiti shooter's Club here, and it is probably the best group I have ever shot. I can't prove my rifle can meet this challenge, because frankly I don't have the shooting skills others on this board have. But I am pretty confident that with the right person behind it, my rifle could probably meet the challenge. I have a VX3, 3-9 x 40 on this rifle, and was shooting 140 gr Nosler partitions, Federal Premium factory loads (I don't reload yet). I'd honestly like to see what this rifle could do with a better man behind the trigger. I think that the best I could manage with your criteria is probably in the 1"-1 1/4" range, on a good day.

Getting closer! 8-)

Feb 21- just back from the Range where I was fortunate to have some "real world" conditions with temp at -7C, light cross wind from behind, intermitent light snow. Didn't have enough loads for my 308 Win hunting rifle to shoot all groups with the same load... so had to go with two different batches..as you see, the three groups with the 165 Sierra Game Kings shoot well in this rifle...the 168 Berger Hunting VLD's not quite so good.

Rifle is out-of-the-box .... TC ICON Weathershield chambered in 308 Win. The trigger is adjustable but I can't seem to get this one much below 4 lbs.

Are you happy? Groups look great. That TC shoots better that most custom/specialty rifles that I've seen!

EDIT: Just checked pull weight - average 3.5lbs, but breaks clean with no overtravel. |

Nice groups 260!

Although shooting 3 shot groups feels like cheating, I buried my pride again and dug out an old favorite that I haven't shot in years. My last shooting with this rifle was in my "pre Berger" days, so I thought I would do so some load testing while taking the challenge. Shot at 100M ..Two groups on right were with 43.0gr H4350, center with 43.3, and two left with 43.6gr...the last groups showed a bit of pressure. Rifle is stock Cooper Model 22 in 260 Rem.

Better view of stock, and the reason this rifle is still with me after several years.

Weather was great today (Sat)...if you didn't get out today, you may be out-of-luck for a few days...snowing!
|
If I wasn't at an archery tournament I would be out shooting :)

To date. March 20, still only two rifles with successful group pictures? What's up? We've had typical hunting weather. Come on shooters!
|
To date, April 19th and still only two factory rifles to show ... Load'em up and shoot this weekend.

This Challenge migrated from Sipers Hide in 2012 to Gunnutz where it was posted by Underthegun on Jan 21, 2013..and was again re-posted (by myself) to AO on Feb 20, 2013. It has been "stickied" on Gunnutz (Hunting and Sporting Arms Forum) so it is easy to find for challengers, and to date it has had over 17,000 views with four different shooters meeting the original challenge requirements for posting. On the re-post, I did not carry forward the Gunnutz practice of tracking the "smallest" group or "smallest average" in order to keep it a CHALLENGE as opposed to a competition.
|
This should add a little spice to those who feel inclined to take up the CHALLENGE now that all the factory hunting rifles are out of the safe.

Nice piece of wood

If I can get some days off when it isn't blowing a gale, I may get a chance to shoot a group or two. I may be able to find out if my theory is right or if I am flailing in the dark. I may even have a big bore that has shown promise. |
So what do you guys think would be a realistic average for off the shelf hunting rifles? 1.5"?
|
I doubt there are any studies on factory fresh rifle groups, but I think the number of sucesses in to date in this thread would suggest there may a limited number that will do the repeat shot performance called for in this thread. I hear a fair number "under 1MOA claims" but haven't seen any go five in a row.
|
I'm still wondering when I'm going to get 15 shots at a deer off a bench.

Well, it's been nearly a year...and I'm back from Palm Springs (again). Bumping this thread to see if there is interest among Tikka shooters ...well, anybody really :) Remember, it's just a Challenge, not a contest. Have fun, and do some shooting.
