Does anyone know what the exact name of those 2 way radios where you can manually enter the frequency with the key pad on mic? ie 166.240 etc And before someone posts I all ready know they are illegal in Canada.

Ham radios are not illegal in Canada

The lady at Rallcom told they were illegal because you could enter cop frequencies

Yes A "Opened up TX radio" is illegal. But to answer the question. just about any of them have the ability if they have A numeric key pad on the mic. Search Ham radio mods to do the changes yourself if you choose. Would look at Mods.dk Personally like the Icoms Run A 2200 right now.

They're called vhf or 2meter radios.

yaesu ft1900r/e, kenwood tk7180 (I think), etc etc.

Not sure what the penalty is for getting nailed with one...I'm guessing probably something on the order of 20 years of waterboarding or something. Unless you use one to commit a heinous crime...then probaby 5 months probation.

I use to have a handheld and the chick from Canada Dept of Anal Busybodies Unable to Get Real Jobs, kept pestering me to renew my registration (like 35 bucks a year or something for the privilege of using Canadian air). I told her I don't use it anymore, and she said something like blah blah blah, big trouble, blah blah blah, fine. Can't remember how much the fine was....250 maybe???

Stay away from radios you pick frequencies if you dont have your canadian radio operators and knowledge of frequencies.

Why all the big to do about 2-ways in AB ?

No big deal in BC, as there are more logging roads, I guess.

Tad radios were the best for self programing. I have an M-8 & M-10. Both set up for self programing.

I'm not sure how well the others work for self programing, as I have always stayed with the Tad radios. Tads can be set up to really put the power out.


I've seen one but didn't get the name brand. A call to a radio com. store will get the answer though....

could you elaborate on why? Be curious to know all the ins and outs.

Them are the ones. I believe the frequencies are something like 136MHz to 176 or something like that.

you can modify it more

and as for the transmission on emergency freq's you will need a tone generator as well...

you remember listening to the scanner and the police chanels..you would here a tone to open the repeaters......

but most of this is not monitored unless there is a complaint...

I would say yes. Those radios are required so that guys know where other guys are on the lease roads. Lots of times, if you don't have the radio, you are not even allowed on the road. My husband works oilfield with a two way and he does not need a radio licence for his.

I use the Icom IC 208H. You can program from the mike or the radio face.
And technically, you need a radio licence for any frequency you use.

Where did you buy the icom?

Western Midland in Calgary. Around $500-$600 I think.

I seen em online for $175-200, not the model you have, but im to impatiant to wait for stuff to be delivered to me lol. Does anyone know a dealer in Edmonton. I like to just go buy it, not wait for canada post to lose it ol

Get it sent out on the bus, 2 days from Calgary. That is how I usually get radios shipped.
