Red Dry Wine

Yes I am indulging. Watching Red Sox/Paxton roundly defeat the Jays I’m cooking elk steaks and taters over the fire pit. I always come back to my first love when it comes to red wines. I’m onto a bottle of Shiraz right now and although I’m not regretting it, I find it’s lacking. So of these four, what is your go-to dry red wine: Merlot; Shiraz; Malbec; or Pinot Noir. I am limiting discussion to these four. Mine is in there, what is yours?

Mr Flyguy 06-30-2023 08:30 PM

Carmenere

fishnguy 06-30-2023 08:34 PM

All lacking but Shiraz in that list.

roper1 06-30-2023 08:41 PM

Merlot for the wife & me

curtz 06-30-2023 09:02 PM

Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon

Dewey Cox 06-30-2023 09:11 PM

Which one is cheapest?

no-regard 06-30-2023 09:22 PM

With a steak, definitely a Malbec.

I've become a big fan of carmenerre the last few years very nice and not overly expensive apparently this grape variety was thought extinct but was found in Chile

I was introduced to this wine during a business trip to Chile.

If you like the velvety taste of Shiraz, maybe a bottle of Meiomi Pinot Noir.

carmenere

CNP 07-01-2023 08:11 AM

Carmenere is not one of the four choices but...

Ok guys...Merlot is my go-to, stand-by, first-love. But I've never been introduced to Carmenere. Where has she been all my life? Never touched my lips. Next stop is Carmenere. Thanks to those who brought her to my attention :)

Baby Duck...I remember some of the occasions where this wine provided entertainment when I was in my adolescent years :snapoutofit:.

nighteyes 07-01-2023 09:24 AM

Cab or a red zen:)

owlhoot 07-01-2023 09:30 AM

I usually go for Merlot or a Malbec but I think I'll give this Carmenere a try. I see Superstore has one from Chile.

Baby Duck leads to Hard Liquor like Lemon Gin

Brought a bottle of Shiraz back from Aus, call me crazy but I paid aprx $300 for it.
It’s a Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 1990.
A search shows going for $5-$600, if you can find one.

Planning to pop it when I finally say I’m retiring.
Could be a few months away, maybe in Sept, or maybe year end.

Malbec is nice sometimes…depends on the producer. It is after all just a type of grape.
Chateau neuf du pape - a good French region…but getting a tad expensive nowadays. The cotes du Rhone is right next door and just as good but doesn’t have the same name and price tag. Once again these are regions so some great wines but some less so.

I've tried some great wines in all of those varietals, but also some really crappy versions of each. For consistency and decent price I'd recommend an Italian Chianti or a Spanish Rioja. Both are grown in very specific regions of Italy and Spain, and all Chiantis include a paper authentication label over the cork. They each have different quality categories and some variation in grapes for the reds, but I can honestly say I've never had a bad bottle of Chianti or Rioja.

I really like Rioja, it’s usually affordable to boot.

Of those 4 varietals I would prefer a nice Malbec with that meal. Not limited to those 4 a nice Zinfandel (red) would be excellent to my palate.

thumper 07-02-2023 05:57 PM

Summer? Sangria.
Winter? Merlot

Like that one too, but not the cheap one. I usually buy the one at a $20-30 price range. I found the the $10-18 ones are not to my likening…

Highlander Wine Store in Edmonton and Calgary sends out emails with their specials every few days if you sign up for it. They have really good deals on some really good wines. Check it out guys.
