Fishing around Edmonton
 

Hey guys,
My wife recently got into fishing, and she loves eating them. Yay! Problem is, I don't know many lakes around Edmonton that are decent and in which you can keep and eat fish, as we usually travel a ways out to get to our favourite lakes, and we do not have a boat. Would anybody be able to suggest a nice lake or other waterbody within an hour or so of Edmonton where you can catch fish to eat? Any species is good. I know it's usually taboo to ask for exact locations, so any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Not much for catch and keep shore fishing within an hour. Trout ponds are the main options, lots of them just look at the stocking reports/stocking map to figure out where to try. Lots of them are likely struggling from winter kill and won't be decent until they get restocked though.

There is the odd spot you might be able to catch a keeper pike at but most of those lakes are much better if you have some sort of boat. The few shore spots I know of are so small and limited I don't feel it is fair to share them online. You can find them easily enough by looking in the regs and seeing which lakes still have open limits then researching the accessibility on google maps etc. The extra time/effort to find your own little sweet spot is well worth it.

Check out those canals that are used for pumping water into gull lake, full of carp fish them out and eat them all, no limits what else could a guy ask for, just don't let them go anywhere.

The local trout ponds like mentioned. There are several within an hour. When the ice is half off is a great time for casting spinners.

Cardiff is a pleasant place with lots of room to cast or flyfish. Sort of groomed right to the water's edge. 15 minutes north of the city. The trout taste ok. East pit, Chickakoo & Sauer (they are side by side), Ashland are all suggestions.

The trout in some of the lakes don't taste the best. They can taste muddy. Best to dress them quick as you catch them, take out the blood line along the spine and put them on ice packs in a cooler. Some lakes the trout are pinker and taste great.

An hour within edmonton and able to keep means you are pretty much limited to trout lakes. Lots of really neat ones that are beautiful as well....

Does anyone have that one fellas excellent link that has all the trout pothole lakes and descriptions etc.? That would be a good start.

Besides that like one guy said chickakoo, east pit .... somewhere like that potentially. Fishing stores probably get that question a ton, good idea to give them a shout too.
