honestly.. probably the worst .22 semi ever built they look sweet but "most" of them dont shoot, i truly believe most .22's should group 2 inches at 100 yards with the right ammo.

Jamie Black R/T 07-06-2009 03:02 PM

i dont like it....it got stuck someplace between a regular 597 and an M4

my two cents of course

Honestly the most accurate .22 Ive ever shot!!!! Ive owned ruger 10/22's and my 597 blowes them all out of the water. I have a 30rnd clip it never jams and its ridiculously accurate. The best .22 Ive ever shot Ive taken gophers past 100 yards consistently.

fluxcore 07-07-2009 05:52 PM

Im talkin the regular 597 and if this rifle is built of it there is no reason it shouldent perform as well

ABDUKNUT 07-07-2009 06:00 PM

Seems like you fell for the picture, but didn't read the fine print;

From Remington's website;

Well established in the world of 22 rimfire rifles, the Model 597 family of autoloading rimfires adds full-featured, AR-style versions to its line-up, the Model 597 VTR (Varmint Target Rifle) 22LR in two distinctive configurations. With performance-enhancing features derived from Remington’s platform of R-15 and R-25 modular repeating rifles, these heavy barreled, tack-driving carbines will be offered through Gander Mountain® retailers and available nationwide to dealer network through Ellett Brothers.

The are no Gander Mountain stores in Canada, the closest one is in Fargo, ND, and Ellett Brothers in an American distributor, not an exporter to Canada.

Good luck ever finding one of these 'R-15' derived .22's here in Alberta...

Funny. Mine touches holes at 50 and easily shoots 2 inches at 100. Have you owned a 597?

ABDUKNUT 07-07-2009 10:43 PM

From what I've seen, the 597's are on average every bit as accurate as Ruger 10/22's

gphunt 10-15-2009 08:58 PM

Just bought the 594 vtr at the Grande Prairie Wholesale sports for $439.00. wanted to get the Ruger SR22 or the Colt M4, but tired of waiting to see if they will make it across the border, plus, this is NON restricted which is a bonus. what's the point of having a rifle if you can only take it to the range.

As previously mentioned, the VTR is available at both Cablela's and WSS and possibly other places by now. I would much prefer the new Ruger SR-22, but I emailed Ruger, and they replied that they are not allowed to export them into Canada due to their "military-like" features....lol, Ill be picking up a VTR next time I go to wholesale. Hope the 30 rounders feed well.

Jeromeo 10-17-2009 11:07 PM

$440 at wholesale sports. They had 2 that went out as fast as they came in.

daveyz 10-23-2009 11:27 AM

Vtr 597...

Hi guys and Gals, seen three of them on Friday in the Vancovuer Area.
Priced from $515.00 to $599.00 plus the loverly proposed HST ( pst&gst combined 13% )
They have some weight to them, feel balanced in my hands.
Not sure what type of scope would go with it to exterminate a few
gophers and or rabbits though, that might change the handleing of it ???
Aside from the one member whose 597 performs flawlessly anyone else shoot the 597 or the VTR 597???
Pictures of it in action ???
Rob

Ruger1022 10-24-2009 05:30 PM

10/22 is the way to go, alot of the first vtr's were recalled for feeding issues but were quicky replaced.

Canada will not be seeing ruger SR-22 or the colt
m4's
. One place in Canada said they are getting the Colt m4 22lrbut I wouldn't hold my breath. The Colt m4 rifles are in the US now but there is plenty of neg feedback for them.

And I think the only place you could find a VTR is here, most places such as Cabela's have been on back order for at least a month now.

I have a 1022 ati strikeforce aswell as an nordic ar22, lovem:tongue2:

The new wholesale sports in Edmonton have them for $439. They had 2 on the opening day and yesteray I saw only one. If you are near Edmonton, then you better visit the store fast.

Good looking gun but I honestly don't know how well they will shoot....I didn't hear too many good things about it though...Good luck!!

597 VTR Remington

I picked up a 597 VTR on Saturday at the Provost Gun Show from Battle River Sports (Stettler) for $475, tax included. I see they are carried by Cabela's Canada for $469.99

I picked the model with the collapsible stock so my short wife and 5 grandsons could enjoy it as well. I put a 3X9 scope on the picatiny rail and boresighted it last night, looking forward to heading out to the range this week to perforate some paper. With gopher season just around the corner, I think I'll also pick up a couple 30 round clips, too. The clips are made by Remington, and they are only $25 each.

I had a 597 about 10 years ago and sold it fast. Lousy feeder, all sorts of jam conditions with any ammo. Biggest problem was the sldie not closing fully. I am told this has all been rectified and am optimistic I have the makings of a fine rodent whacker. I'll try to report back what I find out at the range.

Sedge18 03-12-2010 10:17 PM

I picked one up last Fall at P&D in Edmonton. Shoots every bit as well as my heavy barrelled 10-22. Can stack them in a dime at 50 yds no problem. I found the American Eagle 49 G grouped best. Some people on other forums have complained about jamming issues. I have had none so far and shot a few hundred rounds. I think you will enjoy it!
And it looks pretty cool too!

Sedge18 03-12-2010 10:18 PM

Sorry, was 40 Grain.

AB2506 03-12-2010 11:56 PM

My brother was just at Bashaw Sports. The Ruger SR22 sold out immediately, well the Remington 597 VTR languish on the shelf.

http://www.ruger.com/products/sr22/index.html

I would also check out the S&W M&P 15-22.

sureshot73 03-13-2010 11:19 AM

i seen one yesterday at the Outdoorsman in medicine hat, $450

Sedge18 03-14-2010 10:58 AM

Anyone seen an M&P 15-22 in Canada. That's the next one I'm after.

Sedge18 05-05-2010 10:21 PM

P&D in Edmonton currently have both the M4 and M&P. Unfortunately, both restricted. Bought the M&P today. Can't wait to try it!

Just to update some of u, I bought my VTR 597 from Marksmens Guns in lethbridge for 500.00 dollors.. What i was told by the remmington rep that happened to be in the store while i was looking at the 597 that the collaspable stock seen in some ads may or may not come to Canada:sign0161:As for the ruger SR the stock is fixed so u cant adjust it...As for the performace of the VTR...no complaints here. Great gun, well balanced and will punch 10 rounds into a loonie sized hole at 50yds..I found 32gr stingers work very well...:fighting0021:

All this talk about the VTR. :snapoutofit: The SR22 is way cooler looking.

I like that one too. 10/22 inaccuracy notwithstanding, if you planned to get a 10/22 and mod it, this one is already 80% there!

I was watching a youtube vid last night of a full auto 10/22 shame shame, not that it's legal, but man oh man did it empty a 50 round mag quickly!:kap:

PoppaW 05-06-2010 08:18 AM

As a semi you can go through the rounds fast enough. I thought I wanted a 223 black rifle but now I know I can't afford to shoot one. Too much fun.

597 vtr

I picked up a 597 vtr a few weeks ago for 405.00 plus tax and added a bushnell trophy xlt 3-9x40. then from lebarons here in ontario and quebec, they have remington 30 round magazines for 13.00 which i highly recommend. they fit and function perfectly and for the price, you can't go wrong. I fired off over 300 rounds in total, probably closer to 400 with all different types. the only type i had a problem with was the bulk 333 pack of winchesters.
other than that, it's hard to find a bipod because the sling swivel is so close to the end of the forestock. the collapsable stock it too cheap, I wouldn't buy it so i bought the fixed stock and am not disappointed. it has a very heavy barrel and is accurate as heck.
the 10 round mags it came with don't last long so I got the 30 round mag for less than what the stock one costs.
i price matched williams arms in port perry at another place where i got the gun from which saved me 100.00 from the store i got it from.
feel free to ask any questions
