Parker Hale Safari in 308 info

I recently purchased a Parker Hale Safari in 308 with 20" barrel. It is wearing a nice walnut mannlicher stock, Which I know is not factory, it has matching numbers on receiver, and bolt, D 631
It also has proof markings which I believe makes it proofed in 1962-63

MXB
2

The M = makes the year the 2 = is the inspector and the B = Birmingham Proof house. It has the cut out on left side of action
What Im wondering is, where was the action made I believe it is pre Santa Barbara.
I will try to get pics up tonight if I can figure out how to do it now that photo bucket is gone.
Thanks
Brad

Parker Hale Safari's were built on military actions with a thumb cut out and later on commercial actions without the thumb cut, that would be the Santa Barbara action.
The military action PH Safari's that I've seen are marked "Safari" or "Safari De Luxe" on the left side of the action in front of the thumb cut out. If Parker Hale welded and ground down the Mauser factory stamps which were usually on the top of the receiver ring to de-militarize the action then it's likely impossible to tell who built it since there were at least 4 plants producing the 98 rifles. If your rifle has scope mounts then the markings will be hidden below it "if" they still exist.

Sweet I'll take the mounts off and check. Thanks

Got to making it mine

Well I couldnt find any markings under the bases. But Im very happy with the rifle.
It is a beautiful Dark walnut with some figure. It had a nasty shinny varnish and a monte carlo rear stock.
I figure any mannlicher type stock needs a more traditional hogs back style. So I got at it with a rasp and file then scrapers (I was able to get the look while keeping the comb high for scope alignment). Then put some love in to it with paper, whiskered it and paper from 80-600.....
then lost of love with tung oil and....
Ill get some pics up some time.
Very Happy it has nice almost black chrome bluing. The silky smooth deep oil finish Mannlicher stock with hogs back, just looks right!

Sounds like your pretty handy with wood, overhauling an old rifle brings a lot of satisfaction!
Can't wait for the pics.

Great job on the stock!
Pretty decent looking wood too, it's amazing some times what you find underneath all that varnish and stain!

personally, i am not a fan of the 'hogsback', thought it looked pretty awesome except for the finish as it was.
if this contour blows your hair back, you've done an excellent job and now it's 'your' rifle, congrats!
nice little gun, you will enjoy it, lee
