Eating Alberta wild rabbit

Can you eat wild rabbit in Alberta?

Hydro1 04-22-2015 12:14 AM

Yes, why not?

Mulehahn 04-22-2015 12:32 AM

Yes, they taste great. That being said standard rules apply, if the there are spots on the liver discard the animal immediately, this is a sign of Tularemia.

Hunter1602 04-22-2015 12:37 AM

Yup, ya sure can. As the above post states check that liver everytime.
Tastes great mixed into chunky soup.

Rabbit sausages are also delicious.

Anyone willing to admit they ate the 'wild' rabbits in city limits? You know the ones that are always runnnig around the houses and back alleys.

recce43 04-22-2015 12:51 PM

most city rabbits are jacks tough meat . i heard you boil jack with a rock when rabbit done throw out the jack and eat the rock

husky7mm 04-22-2015 02:47 PM

I have ate a few snowshoe hares and they were not very tasty. I use to eat cottontails on the coast, they were very good. Woundnt mind hearing a recipe for snowshoe and i will give them another go.

Any good recipes? Favourite ways to prepare rabbit?

Hydro1 04-22-2015 08:11 PM

Rabbit stew, oven baked are all good.
My favorite is spit roasting one over an open fire after a day hunting/hiking/camping whatever. :acigar:

Where I live near downtown Calgary, most of the bunnies aren't even truly wild, they're feral pet bunnies of all colours.

Yeah, most of those are the result of misguided Easter gifts to little kids. They are domestic rabbits gone feral...likely taste OK. You may want to use a reduced recoil load in your 12ga on Princes Island so the residents in the high $$$ condos don't get too upset with the noise...
:)

agentsmith 04-23-2015 10:26 AM

They often let you get so close that I could hunt with a knife if I knew how to throw one. Maybe a strong slingshot...

Brown in pan, then slowcook in the oven covered in cream sauce or mushroom soup... Eat when fork tender.

Oh my god I want some now....

One tough cookie you have got growing up! My 20 years old girl didn't talk to me for a month after she found out that I actually killed a bunny long time ago...:bad_boys_20:

L.O.S.T.Arrow 04-23-2015 01:17 PM

:D Rabbits are very lean...one can essentally stave to death on a diet of just wild rabbit unless other body parts are eaten...and they are a little "stringy" for some peoples likeing...so the perfect fix...

Take 4 bunnys...
two boned porked chops...or half package of bacon...

Grind into burger and season to taste...most awesome "Bunny Burgers" or burger you ever tasted....ohhhhhhhuggg *drool* lol

Neil
