9 Vehicles per day stolen in Lloydminster
 

So.... are people leaving keys in them to get insurance? A lot of the vehicles listed have PATS or chipped ignition, how are they bypassing them? Does every car thief carry a laptop? I hear that if you have a command start in the vehicle they use it for the bypass, but 9 per day, what the hell?
Man I wish claymores were legal.
Mine are always in the garage with cameras 24/7 but I can see one day someone getting brave or wearing a bellaclava which renders the camera useless other than to let me know it is time to warm up the baseball bat.

A truck was even stolen here a couple nights ago, 98 Dodge diesel, no chip in this one.

Edmonton police say that 33 idling vehicles have been stolen in just the last nine days.

That's 25 per cent of all the vehicles stolen in the city recently, and this is just the beginning of the cold months.

An idling vehicle can disappear in a matter of seconds, Staff Sgt. Ron Smithman told Edmonton AM Friday morning.

"It just happens that quickly. Just yesterday a fellow went into a business to grab something. Moments later he left to see his van driving away."

Put out a reward for tips to find the chop shops. Junkies would grab the free cash.

Don't park by the court house after the judges let them out they steal a car to get home.

There was a short documentary on an American network about vehicle thefts and how quickly they can be stolen. Chips, steering wheel clubs, alarm systems, it doesn't matter anymore. These thieves are always one step ahead of the game when it comes to security measures. It is shocking to see the amount of vehicles that are stolen due to people leaving their keys in the vehicle.

Who's stealing them. Druggies? I wonder if more free injection sites would help.

Crooks? Maybe we need to bring back the lash. A friend of mine who was a professional crook spent many years in penitentiary. He said of all the punishments. solitary, loss of privilege longer sentence, the worst punishment and best deterrent was the lash.

Its to bad there appears to be no outside police force in Lloyd or Wainwright or Vermilion, etc as it seems like this would be a pretty easy sting............if you could just tear the cops away from their desks.

Had a rash of stolen vehicles in town lately. always keep mine locked even when warming up.

Police serve the force, not the public.

This is a yearly, and predictable problem.

The solution is very simple with all the technology we have now.

To be fair, the fellow should have shut the engine off and lock the vehicle on his way out.

People leave their engines running when they go for 5-20 minutes shopping, and it happens in -10 and -30 temperature all the same. Any "large" store parking lot gets disgusting really quickly around here with all the smoke once the temperature starts dropping. And like I said, it does not have to drop that much, really. I don't care what kind of vehicle you have, you can shut it down for 15 minutes while grabbing some groceries, even if it is -30 outside.

This year, I started noticing some geniuses leaving their vehicle running on a hot summer day as well to keep the a/c going. Really? I do not know wtf is wrong with people, to be honest.

If your vehicle gets stolen because you left it idling for that one minute you had to run in to the business, it is on you! I have no clue what the insurance companies do in situations like this, but they should definitely be telling people that they are denying their claim and people should think with their heads next time they go shopping.

I am not saying that it is ok to steal if the opportunity presents itself. Those ****ers should be punished with some harsh labour while in confinement and not just shoveling seniors' driveways.

I agree! People leave the truck running with heat on when they go to lunch in winter and the a/c on when they wander around wal-mart, see it constantly. And not on command, they leave it running for an hour.

When mine was stolen last month and it was recovered along with two pop cans in the cup holders.
Were finger prints taken ...nope !

Jail time is just a place for them to hang out with their buddies.
And its costing us tax payers this hotel bill !

We need to catch them and make them accountable .

Hard labor that pays for a BRAND NEW TRUCK to be given to the guy that had a 5 or even a 10 year old truck !

Perhaps It's time to leave some sting vehicles planted and catch the scumbags. When the thief jumps in and tries to drive off two people hiding in the back seat put a bag over his head and more people run over and tie wrap his hands and take him for a ride. Then after a good education session, the thief is dropped off at the entrance to the hospital. Unfortunately , the same police that seem to care less about vehicles being stolen, would consider the thief the victim, and would actually make a considerable effort to charge the people that dealt with the thief.

Why do they get a free ride to the hospital? Punt em out and if they make it there, fine...if not...natural selection.

If there is that many per day this time of year then it's people being stupid.

Don't be a victim.

Start your vehicle with your starter just before you leave.
Not 30 minutes.
Do some manual labour and scrape your windows instead of relying solely on the defroster to do it for you. Buy some of the Alaskan ice melt windshield stuff and it makes that chore even easier.
Then get in and start driving.
You don't need your vehicle like a sauna on the inside before you start driving.
Don't cry about it being cold, you live in a Northern Country that gets cold in winter.
Suck it up.
If you stop for two minutes or 30 minutes. Turn off your car. The inside temperature won't drop that much in 2 minutes and after 30 it'll warm up quicker.

Don't leave anything valuable in sight inside your vehicle. Take it out or hide it.
Put all your hunting/ fishing gear in it the in the time before you leave. Not the night before.
Inconvenient?
Sure but not as inconvenient as your vehicle broken into and stolen. And having to replace everything. Or not being able to go where you were planning.

After you park make sure you locked it. Don't rely on the fob to tell you it's locked. Physically pull the handle to ensure it locked.

The thief wants an easy score. They won't put the effort in for yours when your neighbor didn't put any into theirs.

Don't be the victim.

And if you are, then report it as quickly as possible. If the police find it and return it hopefully it's not too badly damaged. If it is that's why you have insurance.
Did the thief get away? Probably? Are the cops seemingly doing nothing? Maybe. But you did get your property back.

This isn't CSI and not TV and they can't always finger print and look for strands of hair to analyze.
And even if they did, it would likely take months of being back logged anyways and the thief would still be out there anyways.
If they didn't get him this time maybe they will the next time.

I agree entirely that people who leave keys in a running vehicle are asking for it to be stolen.

However there seems to be an insane amount of vehicles stolen daily all over Alberta. I am part of a Facebook group called "Alberta Wide Stolen vehicles". There is a constant stream of trucks & car of all makes being ripped off from peoples houses and work. It is sickening. Often there is a horse trailer or cargo trailer attached to the truck.

99% of these vehicles are stolen without a key in the ignition. Thieves are going above what the average Joe can do to secure a vehicle. It seems that even key chipped vehicles are not immune. I've heard of people putting battery disconnect switches and all sorts of gadgets. This is still not deterring thieves.

Check out the Facebook group "Alberta Wide Stolen Vehicles" and you will be astonished.

Unattended Idling vehicles is a western thing from what I have seen? It was rare to see a vehicle left idling unattended in northern ontario except for big trucks at a truck stop.
