22 Cal Bird shot?

Found a box of this stuff.
What would it be used for, mice at close range?
And what size shot would it have, dust?

.22 bird shot

We used to shoot barn swallows with it when we were kid's, thats probably about all it's good for, it worked.

birdshot

I used to use those to clean pigeons out of the barns. Basically a rock-salt load that wont damage the buildings when shooting from the inside-out. You do have to be within around twenty feet of your target to make it work though.

Dad used to have a Winchester pump that was smooth bored for the 22 Whiz-band ammo that C.I.L. sold.

I can remember my older brother selling 3 shots for 25 cents at the gun club picnics and open houses . he used mosquito clays and a SUPER SMALL trap mounted on a work bench!!
Never seen another trap like that after.....

I have an uncle who lives in Panama, he uses it to chase off cats. I've heard people say it can mess up the rifling but I'm not too sure if theres any truth to that.

How so? It's lead, it might foul up the barrel, but I can't see how it could hurt it.

With smooth bores I have a buddy who has made clean kills at over 40 feet on pigeons.

A smooth bore pump loaded with birdshot is just a blast in a grainary full of mice.

The good ol boys in Arizona use .22 bird shot to shoot big grasshoppers.

good for bats

My old landlord used to shoot bats that either flew or crawled out from the old basement they had. THere were marks around the basement door from the shot.

CCI still makes some, I believe.

i have some cci stuff. couldn't kill a magpie at 15 feet from a rifle. all that rime waiting to see it fly away, lee.

I tried some about 45 years ago. It was a total waste of money. I shot a magpie at about 40 feet, it just ruffled it's feathers and flew away.

They usually have #12 shot in them :)

I've used them for really close range for sparrows etc in the old barn, they don't put holes through the roof.
They work good on mice as well, kick a board over and :character0110:

the crimped cartridges made by a few different companies with #12 shot work. i have had abit of close range success with them. the CCI with the blue gel capsule covered shot are a failure.

If anyone has a smoothbore pump 22 for sale please contact me. Remington, Savage, and Winchester had made them. email is balisong177@hotmail.com

It's good for magpies and close shots on grouse that you want to use for taxidermy - doesn't cut feathers like heavier shot.
