Canmore to Spray Lakes Road Condition

Anybody was there this weekend? How's the road? Thanks!

Did you make it out? I know the road was icy that weekend you asked about. i saw a schoolbus slide sideways down the hill and block it for hours.

I'm thinking about checking it out this weekend. Curious how the ice is by the shore??? I'm sure the middle is still extremely thick.

I was out last weeekend and no issues. Still lots of ice near shore but these temps will change that i'm sure.

I was on Friday Apr 5 when it snowed the day and the night before. I got there with no issues.

Plenty of snow on the shores and the lake. Solid at least 2' of ice.

The road was plowed during the day and the snow melted when I returned except some part that were in the shade.

The road was better than the last time I was. Some repairs were made but still some bad parts but manageable. I had a small 2wd car and survived.

I wouldn't be worried about the shores with all the snow that I don't think will melt so soon. Shore ice melts when the shore is not covered in snow and the dark soil is heated by the sun. The snow will reflect the sun so it will not melt so quickly.

I was thinking about going there yesterday but packed my ice fishing gear and didn't want to unpack it again.

Thats a bad road in summer .its good for taking out brakes. I borrowed my 3/4 ton truck out to the son in law years ago as he was renting a small tent trailer to go up to spray lakes . That summer i ended up putting new brakes in after his trip .
10 years later him and i did the trip just pulling my boat . This is when he told me ,he did not rent the tent trailer ,but rented the 24 ft holiday trailer .My truck did not have the electric trailer brake set up so it was good for a small tent trailer not a 24 holiday trailer. This was the last time he borrowed it . It even cam back dirty and empty with less fuel in it than when he took it .

No respect!

I went out on the 14th and it was still safe. Still 20-24" thick even 20 feet from shore. with this cold weather/snow coming I could almost guarantee next weekend will be fine too. The road is pretty rough but fine as long a you go slow. Lots of washboard sections and large puddles for cars - no problem for trucks/SUV's.

Thanks for the update. The trick is to go when the puddles are frozen. It looks like starting tomorrow till Friday inclusive will be below zero day and night and little to no sun.

That’s one way to get burned haha. For those asking, yes, it’s a joke. It would take a cataclysmic event for spray to ever winterkill.

Never got skunked there but some times I had to fish long hours not to.

Last time I was I saw schools of white fish on the camera just passing by. Only a few coming to take a look and stir away or swim around. After I downsized my lure some of them were starting to bite. The ones that I caught they just came out of nowhere and took the lure.

I have a cheap camera but it helps. Sometimes I catch fish because I see them taking the lure and I can set the hook before they spit it out.
