Muskrat Houses
 
Does anyone know if there is a easy way to tell if a house is froze out or not prior to opening it to make a set . Any ideas would be appreciated . Thanks

Walk up to it slowly ,may have to wait if you scared them out.Hit house listen for a slash in water either you broke through the ice or there was a muskrat in the house.

willowtree how low or high do you hit the house to hear the splash of water if a rat is there or the second part of just breaking the ice iam confused at because the houses are pretty big & thick . Thanks

I was in the most part joking when you hit the house you hear a muskrat going in the water with a slash or you fall through the ice surrounding the hut,understand now.

I use a length of metal rod. Push it through th top in a couple of places. You will be able to find water. If frozen you will know it as it will be very solid.
