elk ivories

What do you guys do with your elk ivories?

1886 10-06-2014 10:03 AM

Some people have jewelry made out of them. I just have mine in a pill bottle. Met a lot of people that don't even realize that elk have them

Bassett 10-06-2014 10:36 AM

I have yet to get my own elk but my father has a few ivories. We both keep one Ivory from our first bull together in our pockets! Good luck charm. ( opening day on my first hunt ever) always wanted a ring made out of one... Maybe some day.

Mike_W 10-06-2014 11:26 AM

I was thinking an inlay in my elk rifle or knife handle

Game Hunter 10-06-2014 02:09 PM

I didn't know they had such a thing. Where are they?

north american hunter 10-06-2014 02:14 PM

On the upper jaw where the canines would be on a dog.

PBHunter 10-06-2014 03:22 PM

Both cows and bulls have them, and they are in fact canine teeth (first tooth embedded within the maxillary bone of the skull) .

edmhunter 10-06-2014 04:41 PM

I had a friend in Manitoba when I lived and was hunintg elk there, most were made into jewlery, especially necklesses. Always though they were unique pieces.

Lefty-Canuck 10-06-2014 04:48 PM

They are all unique....here is a couple sets I have from the last two years.

I did this with a couple of mine. Always wanted to have another set inlayed into a custom knife handle.

Grizzly Adams 10-06-2014 07:23 PM

Natives apparently appreciated them as well.

Grizz

cowmanbob 10-06-2014 07:47 PM

They lay around and collect dust.

Mike_W 10-06-2014 08:00 PM

I was also thinking about just attaching them someway to a knife sheath and/or rifle sling

NBFK 10-06-2014 08:03 PM

Get a pinky ring made. You know a nice going out pinky ring.

Crazy- did not know that. Trying this year for my first elk. Good to know, pics look neat too guys.

Jonny14 10-07-2014 05:59 AM

I know a guy who takes the teeth and carries them in his pocket with a bunch of change for a week or so. It seems to polish them up really nice.

Rantastic 10-07-2014 10:30 AM

I will be getting mine made into a nice custom ring when I save up the money. It will be the start of a new family heirloom.

Mike_W 10-07-2014 03:09 PM

The ivories from my bull this year were the nicest I have ever got!
Gonna figure something out for them!!

Nice ring ryry just curious what something like that would cost.

Ryry4 10-07-2014 06:24 PM

I can't recall the exact price but I'm sure it was under $1500.

xxclaro 10-07-2014 06:25 PM

I think mine ended up in the garbage, or else they are still laying around on the shop floor. I've never seen anything made of them that I thought looked good, always look kinda gross to me so I doubt I'll be keeping any.

double gun 10-07-2014 07:55 PM

I cast two rings in silver for my first two.

Next time you knock an elk down let me know I'll take them off your hands.

Springer 10-08-2014 04:30 AM

Hey Lane, I have a little bag of Me Lucky Huntn Charms with me , and all my Ivories except my first Elk are in it..Their just Plain Cool and for the 5 minutes it takes to get them out is worth it.
This Years Euro i am hoping they will stay in, If not they go in with the rest.

No other Alberta species does. Elephant, hippo, walrus, certain whales, elk are the ones I know of.

Talking moose thanks Lefty Canuck, gives a quick nod and continues eating willows.
