Mule Deer Down!

I folded my mule deer tag yesterday morning. Huge thanks to my good buddy Nick for all the help packing and gaining permission in this beautiful area.

Tried the gutless method on this deer and I'm never going back to the old way.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...75a9e99129.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3090fda4e2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5faeb0e306.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c6f4e870a1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4d7ce471a8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...809699409c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...69d7faca93.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...897807f4e4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6a6c147542.jpg

Great looking buck, beautiful country. Love that cape and spending time in the hills of the river valleys. Congrats man

elkhunter11 11-11-2018 08:32 AM

Congrats on a nice buck, tough country to recover a deer from.

35 whelen 11-11-2018 08:33 AM

Nice dear ,yes the gutless method is the only way to go when I used to hunt mule deer I'd always carry to Orange garbage bags to put on their Rack when you're packing out.

Great looking deer and nice mass in the body too.

As someone interested in trying the gutless method I'd love to hear your pros and cons of this approach.

Great field pics in beautiful country. Nice wide buck. The bigger the effort, the sweeter the prize!

Thanks for sharing.

JTRED 11-11-2018 01:21 PM

Spectacular scenery, pictures, and deer. I would love to hunt mule deer in the badlands like that, definitely on my wish list. Not to derail your thread but I was wondering how possible a backpack hunting trip into country like that would be?

JoshT 11-11-2018 06:35 PM

Very cool looking country! Congrats on what looks like a great trip!

marky_mark 11-11-2018 06:43 PM

Nice buck

MountainTi 11-11-2018 07:13 PM

Good deer! There are some dandys in that area

goldscud 11-11-2018 08:00 PM

Well done! Such a beautiful area to sit and pick apart with the optics. The pack out only adds to the trip (after you rest up)

Hard earned Buck

Great Buck How many trips to get it all out..... mine was 3 but I was solo

NayNay 11-12-2018 09:11 AM

Can't think of any real down sides to the guttless method. Might be a little more challenging on your own I guess. I don't know why I didn't try it sooner, so much cleaner.

There was two of us packing the deer out and we each took two trips. We could have got it in one bit we had all day and no point in killing yourself.

And damn cactus, slipped comming down and almost sat on the one in the pics!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...34ea5e336e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...90109b896d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9a1e15a348.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d05dcd2a70.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...682843d775.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4b93f95e9c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...73e768e5c9.jpg

Nice buck!

The gutless method is great. You just have to remember to leave evidence of sex and species on the quarter with the tag. The reason I think we should be allowed to tag the nose or eye socket on a trophy animal.

Beauty buck, love the area around the badlands, I hunt wmu 158 great spot the get a big mule when you can get permission on the land. I bet that bad boy will taste mighty fine with all the work you put into it

Great buck,congrats!
Gutless is definitely my go to method for all elk/moose and any deer that’s more then a 2-300m drag to the truck.I butcher my own harvests so no need to drag all that junk home, might as well bone it out sooner then later and reduce the weight that you need to pack out by 50-60% or more if you completely
bone it out in the field vs. skinned and quartered.
ie;take a 1000lb live weight moose for instance....
Field dressed you’re looking at moving 850lbs of dead weight.Cut in half at 3rd rib you’re still manhandling 400+ lb halves with a quad.
Gutless skinned and quartered with the backstraps/tenderloins/neck and rib meat salvaged....550-600-ish lbs.
Bone out the 4 quarters and your down to 350-400 lbs of boneless meat in a 1/2 dozen game bags......or about 75-80 lbs of boneless meat for a BIG mature WT buck that field dresses 200+
No need to kill yourself humping out butcher scraps imho......coyotes and ravens gotta eat too,ha.

Congrats on the nice Muley, what a great place to hunt, beautiful!

As per the Gutless Method. I watched a video of a guy doing it about 6 years ago I have never done an animal any other way since! I can do a moose in under 30 minutes, remarkable actually. As for the organs I don't eat them so the yotes can have them.

I leave the hide on and clean it up when I get home, protects the meat from dirt, leaves etc.

Wow. well done.

beautiful landscape!!

Question. how do you salvage the Tenderloins on the gutless method?

Remove them from the outside. It requires an incision on either side, but is easily done.
