Big Lakers
Go to Plummers Arctic Circle Lodge..
The only adventure to celebrate for your 60th !! It might cost a small fortune, but it is worth it !! While there, take a day trip to Coppermine or Tree River for Arctic Char as well. You only live once and the trip will live in my mind forever. I took my Father in 1991, when he was in his Prime Of Senior Life at 66.. I caught many Lakers up to about 35 lbs on a Fly Rod ! My Dad caught so many of everything that he just cruised and only fished 3/4 time for the last 3 days.. Go For It !!!!! |

Plumbers ..... "Trophy Lodge" go on the July 01st Long weekend or the weekend there after just after the ice goes out.
Trophy Lodge is about 1 hour west of their main lodge on the Smith Arm, stayed here twice, camp holds about 25 guests max, guides are excellent and most of the larger fish come from this area. While booking schedule a beaver charter to MacIntosh Bay that's were the monster lakers come in to feed in the shallow sandy bays at ice out, you won't regret it. They have a plane/pilot stationed at Trophy and take the trip to Coppermine or Tree River for Arctic Char as others have mentioned. Good info here .... https://www.plummerslodges.com/when-...eat-bear-lake/ Trust this helps make your decision. Here's another Trophy Lodge - MacIntosh Bay article. D. .... I managed to catch and release a 20, 22, 23, 26, 28, 28, 28, 40, 41, 49 and 51. Rezzy contributed a 20, 20, 21, 24, 27, 34 and 38. Art added a 20, 24, 32, 32, 36 and 42, and Rodney, in addition to his new World Record, chipped in with a 20, 21, 23, 25 and 30. http://www.greatbearlakeoutdoors.com...-best-day-ever . |
The top places for me would be great bear i fished it twice, neultin lake Manitoba fished it 3 times, nejanilini 2 times also in manitoba,Lake nipigon has some big lakers, fished it a dozen times.
I know dozens of trout lakes from 15 to 35 pounds,i am not sure about great slave lake I did fish it 35 years ago and did well.I fished a lake last summer with my wife, fished it for 40 years and the biggest trout I ever seen caught was 19 pounds,on my 4th fish I hooked a 39 pound laker.I drifted 3 miles and he went down to 200 feet and I just wore him out,let it go and had few laughs. I know some drive in places, but it couldn't handle 2000 guys fishing it plus you need to draw a tag to keep one plus it has no live bait, but in one day I threw 20 fish away from 18 to 35 pounds, only place I ever got spooled out 35 years ago. I had 20 pound test line and 300 yards on the spool and it just kept making 40 yard runs and stopped then just booter, after 25 minutes my drag as my drag maxed out I ran of line on the ice. fishing.I was in 300 feet of water and he grabbed my bait and went straight down to 150. On great bear if you cross it where it says kreis on the map,a metor hit there and it's all nice sand, but that pool where the meter hit is crazy, specially about ten days after ice out,i seen fish coming up for fly's out that dark hole by the hundreds. Plus if I was to target one place on great bear would be of Halbinsel on the notrh side, fishing that whole shore line head west towards the point I hooked 35 to to 38 there,we had just a dock there 30 years ago and it was out of this world. That big water so watch the weather and go fish inward or the south side. I only fish there 6 hours then the flight came to pick us up,if a guy targeted that area for a week straight there is for sure 50 lb plus,no cuff or even bigger. All the other places I mention are also very good trophy lakes. |
Double post.sorry about that.

i would recommend lake Athabasca. huge fish there and its mostly a fly in lake and its HUGE.

Depends on budget. My money would go to Athapap. A week would cost less than $750 with fuel and camping , Plummers is $5000 ish ? Would I go if I had the money , you bet. I've had trips at Athapap where we had 2 fish over 43" landed a day and I've seen 47" fish landed ! Any where you go , trout fishing for a birthday is a happy birthday

Maybe check out Tazin Lake looks like they get some monsters out of there ,

Lake Athabasca.

Yes obviously this is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing considering I'm 60 but they did just raise my Visa limit[emoji16]

I fished Great Bear and that would be my vote, a friend of my brother got a 67lb laker up there. On the many days we fished there were always 40 pounders being landed. Spent a winter up there in Deline with my brother, he'd go teach and I'd go fish.
