What to do with a old car....?
 

What do you do with a car that is still super reliable, but the body is rusted out?
Taking it to a scrap yard seems like a shame but nobody wants a rust bucket no matter how reliable.

Drive it as long as it is safe. If your feet don't go through the floorboards and pieces are not falling off then why get rid of it. When it is going to cost more than your willing to spend then get rid of it.

Start saving up for the next vehicle so you have a good down payment.

There might be some legal restriction on registering or driving a vehicle with excessive rust damage in Alberta, not sure. Certainly in other jurisdictions, it would never pass inspection.

You might try putting in a nice fiberglass body patch, smoothing it out, and painting with epoxy paint to match the rest of the vehicle. Wouldn't have to be a bodyshop job, but you probably could make it look half decent and structurally sound.

Selling it cheap to a yard for parting out might make the most sense. Or just use it on the farm as a lunch-getter, when working in the field.

Sorry I should have added she bought a new car already. The idea was to gift it to a nephew, but he got one from another relative.

The majority of the rust is the fenders around the wheels. It's a Mazda 3

If I was keeping it, and that's all it was, I'd inquire with some body expert to see what it would cost to cut out and weld in new sheet metal. Just a rough job, to stabilize things and make it look better than it is right now.

Otherwise just sell it cheap, making note of the rust.

There is always a market for a $500-$1000 vehicle. There are countless forums on facebook for them

This ^^ If it runs and can pass the lamest inspection like the Alberta Vehicle Insurance inspection ( I kid you not, it is lame) it's worth $1500 hands down :)

Donate it to your local fire department for extrication practice.

I know if I was hard up and needed a vehicle I would sure appreciate the reliable low-cost vehicle section.

You can also donate it to Teen Challenge - They have a Vehicle Donation Program. No hassles, and you get a decent tax receipt for the car.

Could also sell it at auction. A neighbour did this last year at my suggestion and we got an eyesore off the street.

As mentioned, put it on kijiji or a FB page for a couple bucks. It won't be around for long.

This, for sure. Someone needs that car. A single mom or a guy who just needs to get to school or work. I would advertise it not for free, but for a fair amount. Stress it’s reliability. Once you have buyers show up, (most who contact you won’t) you can feel them out. If they really need a car, and they like yours, and you like them, gift it over for less. Your kindness won’t ever be forgotten.
