I know I am not the only one who make fishing gear so thought it would be interesting to see what others are making. I build a good variety of gear and always keep expanding. I like big predatory fish so my gear often leans that way but tinker with little stuff too

So lure builders, rod builders, plastic pourers, fly tier, jig makers, painters and any other kind of fishing related gear makers let’s see your skills. It doesn’t matter what your skill level is let’s see it

I will keep adding to this thread as I complete different designs and patterns

First up are 2 square bill crankbaits these are a bulky design that was designed to create a real thump to get the attention of fish. These come in at little over 3 oz and 6 1/2 inches long. Hardware is all stainless and they run 5/0 4x strong trebles. They have 3 layers of epoxy clear coat to take the abuse of big teeth. They have worked well for pike and lake trout. These 2 will be sent east to see what musky think of them

Nice! Looking at the lip and angle, those must dive pretty deep?

I tie flies. Crude but all work well which is all that matters.

For this ice season, I have a good collection of scuds ready. First time tying them. The one in the top left is the only bought one that I used for reference. I think mine are a bit "hairier" which I hope helps. The leeches at the right are balanced and have led wire wrap underneath. Great for ice fishing trout.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery or something like that?

Was bored one night and decided to try to copy a local companies design.

I didn't have the exact material I needed on hand, and its rough, but should catch a fish? haha

Smoky buck 12-16-2019 12:52 PM

Those crankbaits sit different in the water changing the angle so the pic is deceiving. They only dive to about 4-5 feet

I bet the fish don’t care if your ties are crude. Pretty flies and lures are to catch fishermen not fish lol.

Warning that is the way it starts and next thing you know you have a whole room dedicated to lure building and fly tying

Don’t as how I know this :thinking-006:

That’s what I make

WayneChristie 12-16-2019 01:08 PM

have tried lots from handcarving some ugly plugs to pouring weights. made a couple molds one 7 ounce one 9 with a wooden model set in plaster of paris. perfect for insane river run off and when it dies off I just remelt them and pour smaller ones in some storebought molds. word of caution let the plaster dry WELL before you try it out :sign0176: also tied some ugly walleye flies that have caught a trophy or ten for me :)

Wayne your warning about plaster molds is definitely something to watch out for

Here are some of my pike spinners. I make the with bucktail as well

This morning sucked I had a batch of these drying the last layer of clear coat and woke to find my turner knocked over. This was the lone survivor out of the batch. Had a really nice new walleye pattern that I was impressed with wrecked

8inch crankbait dives to two different depths and slightly different action depending on the tie point you use. Really wide tail swing in the wiggle. Again all stainless and 5/0 hooks

I have see guys post about pouring swim-baits in other threads hope to see there work or any others

It’s all a matter of putting in the time to learn and improve. I have made a lot of ugly lures/flies and ones where the action sucked or was non existent well learning

Only way to become talented is to try, fail and repeat till you get good at it

Hard to tell with the pics would not have guessed

Very cool you clearly have some skill with metal

I dont have anything special besides a cheapy bass pro vice, but i enjoy tying flies and jigs for fishing. Some have been highly effective for trout and salmon. Feels pretty good when your own jigs slay.

Tied a lot of chironomids this year and maybe next spring I'll get some time to try them out.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fdba14c1c3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...688e294c23.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2d172cf2a7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...612622209c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5559562e07.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4756f42186.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2c858d2c0e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fce7478f93.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e1d96b3207.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e7fcb47da9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a2049f8da0.jpg

Nice jigs black/blue is definitely my go to for a coho jig. I remember years ago when no one really used jigs salmon fishing in the rivers. Remember getting funny looks from people when using jigs before it was popular

Here are a few that I just finished this morning

Much smaller then the last ones but still 6inch crankbaits but less then 2oz and get 2/0 red wide gap trebles. They have a tighter wiggle and lots of flash do to flat sides

I would say that’s at least a few steps beyond scratching

Very nice work

Hey Just wondering do you handpaint or airbrush your lures?

barbless 01-13-2020 11:18 AM

Some really nice work from all.

I use an air brush and a paint pen small spots. My crappy pics miss some of the detail for example that yellow lure has gold scales that the flash blew out

Smoky buck 01-14-2020 10:25 AM

I know there is more members here who make gear so let’s see what you make

Okay, I'll bite. Here are some flies I tied up for pike this spring. Let's hope the fish like them.
