ATV Anchor

ATV anchor. Made with simple scrap steel, welded it up on the old Lincoln welder. I built this some time about 1987 or so?

It's easily the most indispensable piece of gear that I carry. Even in wet swamp muskeg areas, devoid of trees, I can still winch myself.
I've had friends along with me and somebody gets just buried in a swamp, and they say "We got no chance here..." Then I pull out the anchor and proceed to winch us out and they are blown away.

As you can see, over-all length is 33", 7" wide and the teeth are 8" long. I believe all the dimensions matter too. The length of it ensures that it doesn't flip, as the teeth sink in, that long shank of it pulls in hard on the ground and it holds solid.

As long as there is tussocks of swamp grass, it will pull into those and bite into them.

When I am done winching, I grab the handle and it pulls out easily.

Pure bloody genius!

Well I know what I'm welding up this spring :). That is sweet & simple.

That's a great unit.. I made a similar " pull pal" design for my truck years ago. For my atv I took a 10" long chunk of 4" angle iron and cut the two angles back to a point then welded a 14" chuck of round steel cut off a bench press bar?? And welded it along with a loop to connect my winch too... I use my axe to drive it into the ground at a 45 deg angle. It's worked in every ground type I've needed it. I really like your design though.

I just built it with the scrap that was available.

The stuff I used works great, but this could be built using different stuff.

Like I think a piece of say 1-1/2" to 2" wide channel would be great for the shank.

I've always thought the most important things are the over-all length, the length and angle of the teeth.

If it was any shorter, it might not pull into the ground and hold as well. But I don't know that for sure.

If it could be made shorter, but still hold that would be a bonus.

Great idea and thanks for sharing your design!
I also might be making one soon...! :sHa_shakeshout:

I was expecting to see a picture of a Can-am or Arctic cat when I opened this thread. :thinking-006:

When I was heavy into 4x4ing an anchor for skeg was invaluable. It wasn’t used nearly as much as my rear winch or 200+m of winch rope but when it was needed it was a lifesaver.

This is the design I built mine off

^ That looks awesome for deep deep swamp skeg!

I do a lot of my ATV trips solo. One reason this is so indispensable to me.

But I don't just use it in the muskeg. Often even where there are trees, they are not in the position/angle that is going to pull you the best.

So even then I will often use this preferable to hooking onto a tree trunk.

And steep creek banks, same thing. Winch myself all the time through creeks to avoid roll over, back flips.

By design or by default, I think your tooth spacing is perfect for ice fishing also. They should fit in a 8” auger hole if you were stuck on the ice and are plenty long enough to give you some bite.

That is a simple but highly effective design! TYVM for sharing.

Alas, me no welder so cannot make one myself...:(...All good!...:)

I would think a small cultivator blade might crab more dirt, may even work on lite winch pull with larger SXS or small truck.

Sweet!! Thanks for the post.

Just a suggestion that could save you some time and money by adding a handle...

A boat anchor...

Good luck,

^ I'm sure a boat anchor will work in muskeg. But is it going to work anywhere? You're talking about something that might work.

I'm talking a simple anchor that does work in any type terrain. I've been relying on it for something like 35 years?

Not saying that my anchor could not be improved on.

I really hope some people do make ATV anchors and share what they build.

Cheers, Jim

Back when I made that, the plant where I worked had all kinds of scrap steel, and a big Lincoln welder that we were able to use, weekends, nightshifts etc...

But where I am now I just don't have access to the the steel, we don't have a welding shop where I'm at.

$60.00 sailboat anchor is what we used in the argo growing up in McMurray.

Don't miss that swamp country one bit. lol
