Fort McMurray ice fishing

Hey folks,

I would like to know how good the fishing is on the three stocked ponds near town this year. I have been to Engstrom but looking for something closer. Also i don't have an auger yet wondering what my chances are of going through the ice with an axe for now! thanks

Ha! Reminds me of grade 7 or so when some friends and I were going to try icefishing on the Peace River. Hacked through a couple of feet of ice with an axe before we gave up.

ok ill drop the axe idea, how about the fishing? anybody lucky in those ponds??

No, no, no on the axe!

First time I tried it (young, dumb, and full of .... you know) it took me over an hour to finally get through over 2 feet of ice. Top of the hole was 3 feet wide, the bottom about 6 inches.

BUT.

Did catch me two pike. Finally talked to a couple "old timers" a couple of hundred yards away, and they showed me how an auger worked. What a revelation!

im gonna get an auger this week and try my luck next weekend, in the meantime feel free to let me know if any of you guys have been successful on any one of those three ponds.
cheers!

Axe works

We used to use an axe all the time. If it’s a stocked pond normally there has been people fishing it. Just find some holes that somebody else drilled and open them up. We did this for years

Do the auger and if you can get an extension, do it. I remember drilling for half an hour on Engstrom Lake and the ice getting to the bend of the hand auger, couldn't go anymore and there was still another 10 cm. Had to get a sympathetic guy with an extension to finish it off for me.

Also, ice fished Gregoire Lake over by Anzac and caught some walleye.

wow that is some thick ice! did you try the ponds by 63 and airport?
