electric reel?
Hey guys I'm wondering if anbody knows of an electric fly reel. My reason being that my dad only has one arm and I'm trying to get him back into fly fishing. He currently is using a spring wound reel and it works for him but he has trouble fishing streamers with it as he can not strip it back after it had finished its swing. Also I'm looking for a rod for him for christmas. 9ft 7-8 weight with a bit of a spine to it. Any input would be greatly appreciated

never heard of a electric reel of any kind to tell you the truth. probably wouldn't last too long in a wet enviroment anyways. but you never know there might be something out there.
that being said, maybe take a look at the Japanese style of fly fishing. they don't use a reel, just a rod and some line. i don't know much about this style of fishing, but it might be something to look into for your dad. rgds Mike |
Spring models
I have been using one for thirty years. Only problem is they are high maintenance. Is he having problems with his return lever not retrieving? Its thebest option for the disabled.

Its not necesarily the retrieve but he wants to be able to imitate stripping his line back, and the spring wound reel retrieves very quickly. He can't imitate a little 4 inch strip like a minnow. It doesn't mean he's not catching fish either though he landed a 23 inch brown out of the red deer this summer on his spring wound. Thanks for the input gents

What I'm thinking of for this problem would be something strapped on over the shoulder that he could snag the line on and move his chest the opposite direction of his arm. Maybe something that has a mouth piece to control it with. Still in the brainstorming point, but I think it might be possible. See what he thinks, and I will keep thinking. |
