Help with new wolf traps

I just took my trapping course this past spring. I bought a couple Bridger #9 dogless and some snares to try to trap some wolves this winter. I've watched countless videos on how to boil and clean the traps, but i'm still at a loss for where to start and how to do it properly.

Anyone looking to have someone come watch them boil, dye and clean their traps for this coming season so i can learn? I live in Calgary.

Thank you

You can really get lost in the endless amounts of info online. With waxing and everything else. I boil my snares in a pot with some baking soda to knock the shine off.

For foot holds you can boil outside or pressure wash the factory grease off. Then I just store my snares and footholds outside somewhere free of contaminating scents. Footholds will rust over time. I have spray painted some and then let them air out for months.

Thats awesome. Thank you! Much appreciated.

Was just informed that the Bridger #3 was legal only with dog not dogless. I think this is the same with the bridger traps used for wolves. Dogless not certified.

Who informed you? When we were testing traps, we were allowed to alter the triggering pan/dawg mechanism. The scientist allowed this as they claimed it made no difference to the end necropsy result.

Currently you can use Bridger dogless if offset. But do double laminate them for best result and to hopefully be compliant down the road.

The testing performed so far was done to create a computer model for lab testing
traps. More will be passed once the model is complete and recognized

Ian from Dam Beaver was showing the difference of the Canadian legal bridger with dog and the non-legal dogless American version at the picnic last weekend . Also pointed out that it’s in the works to get dogless made legal in Canada.

I've always had my best luck with K9 footholds with just boiling/waxing..

Anytime I tried a dye, full metal jacket etc.. I had traps dug up and refusals.

Excellent information, thank you all.

I’m guessing you have some replacements for sale Bob. Lol

Marty S 08-11-2021 09:32 AM

Guy sez rancher gonna pay to fix them, but look like way too much labour to fix. If it was me id let the guy buy me some new iron and give the wrecked ones to someone who enjoys fixing traps that got runned over with a truck. Coyote traps bad enough to fix but heavy gauge wolf iron gonna be a whole lot less fun.

If you drove over a bfv Beer wolf Trap and bent it like that with a 3/4 ton truck i would replace it with a new one.

Some more good news…

The NO-BS Wolf trap has been passed in Canada, must be modified. I believe the modification is a single strip 1/4” lamination on top of the jaw.

I have a bunch coming in soon. This trap gets the rave reviews, built like a tank but the best part is much of its mechanical design cannot be improved upon, specifically its jaw to lever design for perfect lock up. Dogless design. Also they come plated and are ready to use out of the box.

Anybody want white ones? Tell me now by pm, otherwise I’m just bringing in black.
