Degreasing hides
 

Wondering what folks use to wipe grease from hides as it dries? Specifically beavers. I usually just use a bit of saw dust but find some of the drying grease to be a bit too tacky. I was actually thinking of giving a grill degreaser type spray or something. Not sure if there may be a chance of wrecking the hide though. Or perhaps it’s completely unnecessary?

Wondering other trappers thoughts.

I use a coarse towel. If you have a overly greasy spot, back drag your knife over it and then give it a good rub. Will dry nicely.

Fantastic. learned that from former President Gordie K. it works great and is easy to find at any grocery store.

I just wipe it with a dry rag, sometimes if i miss a big hunk of fat ill take a sharp knife and slice it off or kinda drag the knife to get it to ooze and then wipe it off. Could be overkill but I've sent a number of hides away to get tanned and none have come back with hard spots or anything silly. My auction hides rarely seen a damage tag unless there was a hole, nothing ever from a little fat I would think.
