Edmonton area reel servicing
 

I'm hoping to get my butt out to BC this fall for a fishing trip. Other than ice fishing, I haven't wet a line since moving to Alberta 10 years ago, so my gear has been sitting unused in the garage for the same period, and probably a good year or two before that due to work demands.

Wanting to take my fly reel and spools in and have them stripped and serviced, then reloaded with backing and new lines. What's my best bet? Cabelas? The Fishin' Hole? Could probably just do it myself, but working a lot right now and time is precious. I'll take care of the spinning gear myself, but the fly stuff I'd prefer to have done correctly, lol.

As for new backing and lines, I would choose to support local businesses over Cabelas. So my suggestion for new gear is Reid's fly shop over in the west end:

Reel Doctor for sure.

My fly reels don't require oiling/greasing etc. If yours are the same then just take them into The Fishin' Hole and ask them to put new backing and line on. If they are older models that need oiling/greasing then The Reel Dr is probably your only option since neither The Fishin' Hole or Cabelas are going to do that for you.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, much appreciated. RavYak brings up an interesting point though too, maybe the reel will be good to go. It's a Lamson LP2 that's about 15 years old or so, hasn't been fished in the last 10 years I'd say.

Take a minute and pull it apart.

Most fly reels are 1:1 ratio, no gears involved. Just a bearing, drag system and maybe a clicker. If the bearing is a sealed bearing nothing to be done other then maybe apply a touch of grease to the clicker system(don't put oil or grease on drag).

If it doesn't turn smooth try to find a replacement bearing.

Otherwise blow the dust out of her and she is likely good to go. Your spinning reels have many more moving parts and likely require a more thorough job oiling and greasing.
