Thats a great video . I would have to say the older Dodge trucks were hard to beat back then. When I went truck shopping in 1980 for a short box regular cab, 4x4 ,dodge had the best drive train. Ford had a nice ford 9 inch rear end but thats about it . Just did not like all the pollution stuff under the hood . Air cans ,air pumps you name it ,they had a lot under the hood that could go wrong . The old Chevs looked good but where not tough ,frame wise anyways. We found this out when about 4 of use went 4 wheeling to Twilliger park in Edmonton when it was a motorbike park . They had a dirt pile in the middle of the field about 2 stores high . We had to! Drove up the steep side full blast to make it up and your truck would cannon ball off the top and all 4 wheels would be 2 -3 feet off the ground. i had the dodge ,buddy had ford then a chev ,and one had one of of those 1/2 tons jeeps that came out in the 80s . We had fun . We each maybe tried it about 3 times each. Next following weekend we got together to find out my dodge was the only one that was still road worthy . Most of them bent the frames and a few of them damaged the front end steering. I drove that dodge 10 more years after that Can't believe sold it .
I sold it because in 1980 it costed me only $20 to fill and in 1990 it costed me $40 to fill . Lol ! Ended up getting a diesel 4x4 after that with a long box which was good for hauling a truck camper . Went threw 3 chevy diesel trucks .
Now I'm driving a gas HD3500 Gmc that takes $180. to fill :angry3:

JR, now I know why I was so scared in buying my last newer used truck. Can not believe guys would actually try making trucks go airborn like a plane.

I would take the dodge over that newer 90s ford. Seeing the carb on the dodge reminded me and maybe you guys don't even know it but holley is going to quit making carburetors. Crazy
I don't get the fun in owning a new truck. I guess you can reprogram the electronics on it or something. Heading towards AI and plastic computer trucks that drive themselves. Shaking my head. All my life I loved to drive. Love working at them as well. I'm still running split rims trying to keep old iron alive. Old iron are like time machines. I don't think young people know what they are missing. With AI and other technology I don't know how the new economy is going to work because soon will be no need for people. How will most people make a living.
I'm so glad I wasn't born any later than I was.Maybe suicide vending machine robots are the new AI final solution for unwanted or unneeded

We were foolish and full of **** and vinegar when when I was 20 . I think my truck was only a few months old when it went in the air , only paid $10,500. for it back then (1980)and that was for a new truck . Bought it for real off roading not like most of these jacked up trucks you see now that never leave a gravel road or even pavement with those fancy wheels .
Starting to see a few short box regular cabs around town again . They sure are nice turning around in cutlines .

Ha! Funny video. When I was a young fella back in the early 80's, I bought a 72 Dodge 3/4 ton for $500. It had seen better days. Not much bounce left in the torsion bar suspension but that 318 4 speed was hot off the line up to a max of about 90 mph.

Maiden trip from Peace River to Edmonton in 45 below. Tranny seized up on the highway outside of Westlock and snapped the driveshaft. Felt like I flew 3' in the air. Towed it into Westlock and they patched it up for $400.

A week later the throwout bearing went. I drove it around Edmonton for a couple of weeks without being able to disengage the clutch. Just pull the gearshift back to grind 2nd a bit and then jam it into first. Throttle control for shifting and then pull into neutral when stopping. Just made sure not to stop on an uphill. Finally replaced the bearing and all was good for a while.

Made it to summer. Me and a buddy were coming home from work out at the old Texaco Bonny Glen plant and were idling down Stoney Plain road in rush hour traffic. We were crossing the tracks near where the Sidetrack Cafe used to be. Both of us looked right and saw a slow moving train about 10 feet away and coming. Floored it and the train caught the rear quarter on the box and peeled it back some and sent us for a half spin. There were no crossing guards at that time and no lights that we saw. One of the train guys said that even if the initial lights weren't working that they came on when the train hit sensors 8 feet from the road. I waited for the cops to show up thinking I was in the right. They gave me a $25 ticket for failing to stop at a railway crossing. About a month later I got a letter in the mail saying that they had lost the ticket so were dropping charges but they could resurrect them in the future. Huh. How did they know my address then? In hindsight, it was pretty fishy.

Brazed the ripped box back together and happily drove it for another 5 months or so into the winter. I was heading down Capilano freeway on a cold evening when all of a sudden, I was free wheeling. Something in the drivetrain. Pulled over on the Capilano bridge and hoofed it over to a buddies place. We jumped in his truck and headed back to see a EPS car with lights on and a tow truck picking up my truck. I paid the driver a $10 drop charge and the cop offered to escort us up the hill as my buddy rope towed me to his place.

All of a sudden the cop car is pulling up beside me and screaming out his window at me. I pull over again and jump out. Passenger side rear axle and wheel are sticking out about two feet. The tow truck driver came pulling up again and hooked it up. I grabbed everything out of the truck and said, see you later. Never did go to pick it up and figured they could keep it for the cost of towing it.

Fun times, ha! Still liked the truck when it was working.

I'm more into 70s ford and Chevy but your three quarter ton dodge had c clip axle instead of full float?

Not sure but must have been. I just know it was sticking out a foot or two but didn't fly off the truck. Ha!
