Gun oils and solvents
 

I need to pick up some gun oil and cleaning solvents. Haven't needed these for many years as a little goes a long ways. What is everyone using these days? Has anybody be tried the amsoil products?

Going to be cleaning and oiling my Winchester model 1200 and Remington 1100.

I've not tried the Amsoil products. For bore cleaning, I use good old Hoppe's 9. To address copper fouling in rifles, Wipeout. As far as oiling or protection of the outer metal (shotguns and rifles), I use G96. I don't recommend that you spray or pour oil into the internals of your shotgun receivers, it'll just turn to muck over time. Take the extra time to strip them down and clean up is all you need.

I dismantle them to clean. I need new product so just thought I'd ask. I use compressed air solvent very minimal oiling then reassemble.

Excellent that you dismantle them to clean. Don't use an oil to lubricate the moving or sliding surfaces as they will freeze up in cold weather. Besides, oil tends to hang on to dirt. I would recommend a graphite spray on lubricant that you can get from CT to lube your internal parts. Box locks are much easier to service than side locks. :)

For a lubricating oil, I use G96 synthetic oil. For preventing rust, I like G96 Gun Treatment. Hoppes works okay for removing powder fouling.

G -96 synthetic is good. Firearms need a minimum of oil , most use way too much .

Use Balistoll, very sparingly. Great lube and doesn't dry out, doesn't gunk up.

Been using this machine oil for years on my competition pistols, I think this jug is 5 years old. "Gun lube" is just marketing to justify charging ridiculous amounts of money IMHO. I put it in a small bottle with a needle applicator, use sparingly. Just read the jug, great for guns, slick as cat s**t!

Interesting! Do you know where to get slide oil in the Edmonton area? I don't need a big 5 gallon pail of it, though. Just want to try a small amount.

Edit: I wonder if chainsaw bar oil would work just as well. I've already got chainsaw bar oil but I'll never go through a big pail of slide oil!

Bar oil is not the same. You can get this from any machine shop or machine shop supply.

I just wipe the parts of my Browning auto with a lightly oiled cloth before reassembling. Cold weather does not seem to bother it. Is this enough, I am not well versed in gun lubrication?

Eezox is the best I have found.

I think certain products may be better than others (I like brake free or G-96) but clean and not over lubricated as you describe seems to work.

I use CorrosionX for Guns.

Wipeout for powder and carbon fouling

KG-12 for copper fouling

G96 for the rust prevention in the bore and to wipe down the outside of the rifle as well.

Old gunsmith told me to use sewing machine oil.

He said it was the best oil and didnt have all the marketting bs

I use white owl brand i think it is called. Buy it at the sewing machine store on 170th. 1 litre bulk.

Good information Skytop. I use Mobil Vactra for my lathes' beds. May just try it on my pistols, not that I have complaints about using graphite. But hey, another alternative is always good to know. :)

+1 for Ballistol. Cleans Lubricates and protects metal leather and wood. Otis cleaning cables and Ballistol are all I use now. All the other stuff is just taking up space.

Then use something like G96 complete gun care aerosol for a rust preventative and lubricant.
