Poacher in 306

I was out hunting two weeks ago with my my wife and my young daughter in 306. We were very excited to see a cow moose with two calf's, it has been a while that I've seen that. I just found out tonight that some assh**e shot and killed the cow moose and just left it there and also orphaned the calves which will defiantly not survive. What the hell is wrong with people, why would you do something like that. I have no respect for hunters that do this.

I just read about the Geese they found in the ditch covered with snow north of taber today. Unbelievable what some people do to amuse themselves. Complete waste of good quality meat!

SoaringEagle 11-09-2017 10:03 PM

Despicable humans!

3blade 11-09-2017 10:12 PM

Only one group of folks that can hunt antlerless moose in that zone. Pretty obvious it wasn't a ground check if there was calves.

The calves can most definitly survive though, their survival rate is somewhat lower iirc 10% or so, but they are fully capable and so long as they don't do something stupid like walk on a highway, they will be fine.

Hope f&w catch the losers

You are right, it is only antlered in that area. I'll have to ask the landowner on the progress of the calves.

ryeguy21 11-09-2017 10:44 PM

without any knowledge someone knows what group is responsible for the poaching? Wow what a stretch....

3blade 11-09-2017 10:45 PM

Should clarify I meant 10% lower than what it is with the cow. So 50% would go to 40%, or whatever it is for that area.

sounds like someone was shooting before looking and it just wouldn't grow antlers when on the ground, so they kept their tag and kept goin. imho :)

Only 7 Bull moose tags in that zone, and a 16 year wait, can't imagine waiting that long and not being a bit of a knowledgable hunter, but I'm often disappointed in us humans...

The moose is laying right off the road within 200 yards of a residence . There is no hunting permitted in that area.

Full Curl Earl 11-10-2017 12:41 PM

Possible

Was it possibly hit by a vehicle and dispatched with a rifle?

tacomama 11-10-2017 01:02 PM

Is this the cow moose right behind the fence on the south side of Maycroft road? Saw that one yesterday. There was some yellow tape on the fence, which I assumed was from F&W.

Didn't look like road kill but you never know. If it was a poacher, hopefully they will catch them.

Me too. Unfortunately seems some just like to kill just to kill. Doesn't matter young old or colour.

That's sad to hear, we were coming out from the forestry yesterday and watched a herd of elk cross the road, then saw this cow moose a couple kms later.
What a shame, effing poachers. Hope karma catches up to them.

Lol, small world...must have been you. When we stopped for the elk crossing, there was a younger guy and an older guy stopped there too, so I take it you were one of them.

group rates

I'll bet the calves were targeted and the cow left.Surprised the tongue and nose weren't taken.

That’s correct, cuz if it was that group they are allowed to take it. I think it was someone from his group that doesn’t know the difference and shot it and couldn’t take it.
