Interesting. Something about tree that it likes as it has been gnawed in the past. Wonder if that was what killed the smaller one beside cit.

Elk do that to popular trees during the course of the winter.

Elk just take the Cambian layer so they don't eat them down that deep. Also it's just their front teeth swiping down in long narrow marks.
