Ive had a pretty slow couple years for sturgeon, more than one reason, but this year Im pushing it harder. This 55 inch beauty I caught yesterday , first of 3 for the day, is Im quite confident, my 600th Lake Sturgeon since I started fishing for them a few years back. Its also a prime reason, if you look close at her back, why you should never be too overcautious landing a big one, the scutes on this one were still like razors. It was previously tagged and I have a strong suspicion Ive met it before, and learned my lesson the hard way that time :sign0176:
one of 3 I caught yesterday, and of 12 over the weekend. Rivers are dropping hopefully the high flows will come back :sHa_shakeshout:

Excuse my ignorance, but why would you need permission for a photo? Extra stress on the fish?

Technically, it could be a violation of regulations: Releasing Prohibited Fish.

The regs state:

When the fish is alive, you must release it in a manner that causes the least harm to the fish.

But since Wayne has caught 600 of them (some of them more than once) I would suggest he knows how to handle them and release them with no harm to the fish. :sHa_sarcasticlol:

And the biologist who took the picture was doing so for research purposes....Wayne was just helping out.

Any guess as to the average length and weight of these fish?
You must have caught somewhere in the order of 1500 feet and 10,000 lbs of sturgeon. Truly unbelievable.
I'm not sure if there's some sort of competition for such a thing but you have to be the run away leader if there is. Keep it up.
I'm sure the data you're collecting is helping ensure the long term survival of those fish and some will be around a lot longer than many of us will.

I am please the SRD Biologists are studying the lake sturgeon here in Alberta. It seems to me the population has rebounded over the last 25 years due to the reduced (zero) limits on these cool creatures.

Wow that's quite the number. Congrats and thanks for going above and beyond for this species. Sounds like you contribute a lot to the analysis and study of them. We all owe you for that. A true conservationist and that will be enjoyed long after you are gone. Thanks again
