"The Cold Lake Special"

I was out on Saturday morning in front of the marina. I went there because I didn't have the 4x4, just the car. First time there this year, usually I go off of Garnet.
Anyways, I was using my trusty 'ol Northlands Bionic bucktail with a half a herring. Normally I get a couple with this set-up. I wasn't having any luck, so I put on my Bondy bait (all white one), I landed one, not very big, but it one anyways.

Anyways, there was a guy who was about 100 ft closer to shore than me. So I went over to see how he was doing, well to my surprise, he had been very successful. I kindly asked him what he was using and he said "The Cold Lake special" with a small shiner minnow.

So my question is: Where do they sell these? Probably not here in Cold Lake unless it is down at the place on hwy 55.
Does a person only need a "shiner" minnow and not a herring?
Seems kind of small...

Thoughts on this would be appreciated!:)

"just a white tube jig" that doesn't sound very "special". the cadbury secret is out. lake trout killers.

OK! Great! Now I have to get to Edmonton to get some! By the time I get there:(; I guess I'll have them for next year! Thanks!

What about the bait on them? Shiner minnow or half a herring?

Be careful when you head into Edmonton. The southside wholesale is sold out quite often. I'd call ahead of time. Very hot ticket item.

And with the bait I use whole 4"-5" herring. Wholesale sells Tom browns herring. They come in a red tray. Seems to produce well.

cold lake specials

I was there tonight and there were lots they must have just stocked up.I ve tried other rigs at cold lake but these ones are definately the only way to go. Yellow or white and the green ones it just depends on water clairity and what they feel like. A good bet to stock up when they are there. I wouldnt head up to C.L without them.

Alberta Bigbore 03-08-2011 08:10 AM

phone and check ahead with "The Fishing Center" too on 82st northside

montec 03-08-2011 09:20 AM

7mmremmag 03-08-2011 11:55 AM

I was told to go to WSS on the north side of Edmonton, go to the fishing section and ask for the Cold Lake special, and apparently youll hammer big trout all day with this special lure!

-JR- 03-08-2011 05:55 PM

I was there monday .and like i said they were out of white tubes .
They did have other colours just not White !

What ounce size jig head is tops? I have used 2 oz before but often wondered about going smaller?

DeanP 03-08-2011 07:59 PM

Splake0 is setting me up! :sHa_shakeshout:

boonedocks 03-08-2011 10:20 PM

I was at the northside store tonight. There were plenty of packaged "cold lake specials" at the fishing counter and a big tub of white tube bodies in the jig section.

Chris K 03-09-2011 12:13 AM

Nothing else out there compares to the Cold Lake Special. The magic is in the stinger, and the perfectly balanced head. You won't find that in other tube heads of that size on the market. The Cold Lake Special sits perfectly horizontal due to more weight forward on the head, and it puts your hook in the center of the bait, with the stinger just at the back of the skirt. The wire stinger stays straight and is often the big difference in landing fish vs missed strikes.

mikebossy 03-10-2011 10:41 AM

i'm gonna try and get out for Sunday, what has been the best time of day?, will spend whole day as only have one day, but don't want to miss best time of day if it's early, thanx in advance

Teamprotz 03-10-2011 04:50 PM

I'm no expert , but I've always done best early. I like to be out in the dark and fishing by 730 .

critter 03-10-2011 06:48 PM

Early best by far, daylight at 6:30 ish. They bite from daylight- noon, then slow from noon-3, then they bite again from 3-6. Once it gets dark, they dont bite surprisingly. This being said, they often bite all day.

hot to hunt 03-16-2011 11:20 PM

Franchere sporting goods has them.

Rockymtnx 03-17-2011 12:22 AM

Not that I am headed to Cold Lake fishing anytime soon, but does anyone care to share a pic of one of these secret hooks with us?
