Anyone lose a lot of fishing line?
 

Sorry to vent here, as I think most people on this forum are not to blame, but a friend and I went fishing at Dickson Dam on Saturday, and holy crap did we ever find a ton of discarded line. Since the fishing area is open and has no trees, it's hard to figure how anyone can lose or snag this much line. People must be stripping off and discarding line for whatever reason. That burns me, as I've found several birds hopelessly tangled in discarded fishing line. Anyway, this plastic shopping bag-full is what we cleaned up from a very small area of shoreline...ugh!

I wouldn't go as far as to say that!!! Most members on here are lurkers that you never hear from!! The people you do hear from are usually the ethical the ones , the ones who you never hear from who knows??????????

WOW No kidding. I was wondering if this happens places other than where we fish. Grrrrrrr it's just as easy to strip and throw in a bag especially if you use an electric hook sharpened/line stripper. They shoot it right into the bag!!!

Can we not all agree that a good number of our fellow fishermen are for lack of a better word douchebags? If your don't come home with more garbage that you left with then you are not doing a good job fishing. Beer cans, butts, fishing line, and even car parts come home after a good trip. I follow the regs release everything I catch and feel better about myself when I clean up after myself and others.

I am not looking for a metal but enjoy the hunt both in the water and on the shore and karma gives me a gift from time to time.Both in finding neat stuff and going back to places that are not covered in garbage.

What if I happen to know a spot that's not full of litter, so there's no need for me to go cleaning up others' garbage? Does that mean I'm not doing a good job fishing? Does it make me a D-bag?

95% of the places I fish have no garbage or old line. guess thats because Im the only one who fishes them :bad_boys_20:

Now starts the finger pointing.

The way I see it, if you can pack it in, pack it out. Im the type of guy, if im out fishing, got my line in, waiting for the monster swirling my hook to bite, I will actually clean my area. I don't mean clean after myself, after everyone. I really can't stand litter, especially when it comes to waterways and parks, any nature area really.

It doesn't matter if its a huge ball of line, couple empties maybe, empty bait container, or packaging of new gear (see this a lot, ****es me off), its not pretty to look at, pick it up.

I never throw out line like that near any waterway. I save it and then toss it out the window as I'm driving through Warburg on my way home to Calgary. LOL

Whenever fishing, there is always a bag to throw that stuff into. Nobody should have to come across this. I think more is showing up now because the water level in the reservoirs is being lowered.

I have never been to Dickson and can't see it happening in the foreseeable future but thanks for picking it up!

I always have a backpack with me, with all my gear in there. My backpack has gotten pretty nasty because of all the garbage (from myself alone) have thrown back in there, however I know it's better in my backpack where I will eventually clean it out, than on the riverbank. Even more popular fishing spots have garbage cans in the parking lots, I don't see why it's so hard for people to carry it back! ugh!

Good on you for cleaning that up! Snagged some line while fishing the battle this spring, pulled to see what was on the end... Up comes a broken rod... The ignorance of some people amazes me.. My back pack and tackle boxes might be disasters, but atleast i take my fricken garbage with me...

I used to find fishing line just like that when I used to fish the cardinal river for bulls and cutts.

That fishing line was made into nice little squares.

Being the nice green person old greylynx is I used to take a pile of the stuff to see how it would burn on the rocks next to the river.

It burns real nice.:)

Typically its the people that show up because they want to fish the river , or whatever because they hear its good fishing , might get the big one , and they cast out with 50 lbs worth of weight , or there 10 dollar hook whatever it may be , get snagged and just cut there line .

Maybe show up prepared , I might lose some gear in the river , as will do my clients , but i'm prepared every time out . I have some pretty heavy line , I use a much lighter , leader to tie snells , etc depending how i'm fishing . Even were chucking jigs , still the same thing , spooled with some hefty line and , then a light leader so it breaks the leader before its gonna break my main line .

I will likely get the guys saying because spools on reels aren't made to have 50 or 60 lb line , well the spool doesn't know any different when its the same diameter as 8 or 10 lb line . Whatever it is , i'm just making the comparison .

I guess my message is if you wanna get out to the river show up with proper gear , ask someone , many people here , at fishing shops with countless hours river fishing . Live I've said before Ive been fishing the North Saskatchewan , since I was 6 or 7 years old with my Old man . Use to go sturgeon fishing before it was the cool thing to do .

I know that if i'm taking clients down to the river I head down the night before always bring home a garbage bag full of peoples crap that are to lazy to toss it out , line , minnow tubs , worm tubs , etc . Inconsiderate pigs is how i refer to them . I show up with all our stuff and leave with it .

What works for me is to carry a couple of Safeway shopping bags folded small in my backpack. Great way to pack others and my own garbage out.

I liked the tip of: cram your excess old line into a water bottle and recycle it :)

Esh thats a ton of line, can't even think of a good reason to peel that much off unless you never use a swivle or something. I did lose a whole spool of line this summer but it went into some boneheads prob that buzzed us while trolling.

The only answer is NO.

i dont think any predator on the planet has the least consideration for the environment when they are hunting prey or doing anything period. we're just the only ones with the capacity to litter.

There is an epidemic of littering anglers out there. Two days ago I was fishing on the NSR and a couple of guys came down and asked how I was doing and we chatted. They mentioned that their buddies had fished that spot a couple of days before. I politely mentioned in the conversation that I picked up a ton of discarded fishing line and that was not cool. He agreed.

They set up fishing upstream of us and sure enough when they packed up and left, a minnow tub came floating down toward us from where they were fishing. That pizzed me off. Some poor attitudes out there for sure.

Injured Goose
 

Here is a pic of an injured goose that was in the Wildlife Rehab after its leg was tangled in fishing line. The bird made a full recovery. Last week I stopped by legends and there was garbage all over the place. Not sure what happened to
the drum that was there. I would like people pick up there garbage.

Its the curse of today...so many that have others picking up after them. I find moving trash necessary whenever I camp or fish, sadly too many uncaring sods.
