Chickens?

Wondering, for you guys that have been out and about, if you're seeing many chickens? How's the population looking this year?

I havent seen a population a huntable number of ruffed grouse in years but the sharptails are good. Around here anyways.

I was out at the beginning of September a couple times and the Ruffy Broods looked promising in our area. They were still in their Family groups. Unfortunately the dog work was poor due to the heat. We only saw/ heard 2 groups of Blues so can't comment on them. Haven't had a chance to run the dogs on Sharpies yet, but I'm hoping the numbers prove good when the season opens.

We have seen numbers as good as any the last couple of years.

I was out only for two days so far this season; it seemed like the usual number of birds.

As usual, it was hard to see at this time of year in the bush country since the bulk of the leaves haven't fallen and the grass is still tall. It was also windy on the days I was out, which seems to make the grouse a bit more skittish.

Seems like a pretty good year west of Calgary. I saw probably 15 last Friday and 5-10 Saturday and Sunday. Came away from the weekend thinking I should have carried a shotgun rather than a bow :)

Got 8 last week SE of Valleyview.

No shortage in the area IMO.

Have seen good numbers far north in Chinchaga/Worsley area, the average numbers around Lodgepole/Drayton. Just got out of Willmore and we were seeing sprucies every day as well.

Edson area seems a total bust this year. It's my second season living in out in these parts. Last year, putting up 10+ birds an hour seemed pretty easy. This year, hunting the same area, I've but on about 120km on my boots with two good bird dogs, and we've put up a grand total of 7 birds so far this year. It's disheartening for sure...

Just chatting with the hunting buddies who have arrived early in our Saskatchewan area and they claim the prairie chicken numbers are high.

My quiver has four arrows with broad heads attached and two arrows with judo points on for that very reason.

Ya never know when a chicken will make an appearance.

X2 on the bears around Whitecourt. The birds are out there but not on the cut lines yet...too much feed in the bush. A guy has to be walking 20 feet on either side of the cut lines to be successful.
