New to fly tying, need some advice
 

My dad is going to let me borrow some of his old gear, and he will show me how to tie as well but shared is a good place to watch some videos? Obviously YouTube will have the videos but what ones specifically? My 9 year old son will also be learning with me so the more interesting and descriptive the better we will both be.

Get the fly tying bible. Good start. I may have a copy I can give you. Once you get the techniques down you can tie anything.

Decide what flies you want to tie and then do a google search for video of tying that fly.

Look for Oliver Edwards u-tube videos.

It is a great hobby and one your son may like. Some of the AO members tie flies that could fool an entomologist. Not me. When I first got to Alberta, I had a great day watching trout go wild for grasshoppers. That plus caddis flies became my complete arsenal.

I have found that elk hair is fabulous for dry flies.

I'm ashamed of what mine look like but I know you can do much better.

When you pick some flies that you want to tie, ask some of our experts to show you theirs.

I agree 100% with this.Haven't seen anybody explain better.

The 3 easiest things to tie and the 3 things that will likely catch you the most fish....namely on lakes. Leech (pine squirrel leech), Chironomids, and egg patterns. All easy tie and all deadly!
There should be several videos on you tube.

Jim Misiura is also a name worth searching on YouTube, his videos are easy to follow, though I've only done Doc Spratleys and his woolly buggers.

I see your in Calgary. Join the Calgary Hook and Hackle Club. Those fellas will teach you all about tying flies.

I will look in to it Davey Boy. A big issue for me right now is time with my son's soccer schedule. My Dad is going to help us out but I wanted the vide's because I can watch them when I have the time.

I find DavieMcPhail's is really skilled and his patterns are killer but his videos are too in depth for the beginner fly tier, and his voice makes me fall asleep hahah!

My favorite videos to watch are the TightLines production with Tim Flagler! He shows you how to tie every pattern you'll ever need !

For some Candian tiers on You Tube you can look up Sport Fishing On The Fly. Dale Freshie ties some great flies that are great all over Western Canada

Also Todd Oishi has some great flies on You Tube. Todd is a good friend of mine. He lives in BC fishes all over the world with the Canadian fly fishing team. You can't go wrong with any of the flies that Todd ties.

Scottmisfits, I have something for you. I was given a few rods by a good friend of mine. He asked me to hang onto them until I found someone who would use them and appreciate them. I think now is the time for one of them to find a new home. My friend is no longer with us. But he wanted his rods to be given to someone who would appreciate them. One of them is yours if you would like it.

Practice, practice and more practice.
You Tube will help.
The old Wooly Bugger, is a good one to start with, cheap materials and catches lot of fish. Tie it big, tie it small, sometimes uglier the better.
