Flies for Tiger Trout?
Hi all,
With all the tiger trout stockings in the last few years, I was wondering what fly patterns have been successful for you? I've have had some luck on leech patterns but am looking to expand my options. Thanks in advanced |
I've found they behave much like brook trout, at least in the lakes I've fished for them. Scuds, leeches and boobies have all produced for me.

I was flogging the waters all morning at one lake I fished, ran into this super nice guy named Stu who gave me a fly to try.
Basically I hammered tigers all afternoon until a big one broke it off, then it was back to flogging again for me. DDH leach... I have been tying them all winter now. https://darkwaterdubbing.wordpress.com/flies/ |
Vegas leech in brown or black. Also buzzers to match the midges. Tigers are kinda like any other stocked trout, just a tad more aggressive.

I just looked it up and there are a couple of youtube videos on them. As always some people have their own take on them, Stu has a few articles on why he used the materials he did. |
Instructions and why he used the materials he did...

Thanks for the tips and suggestions everyone. Much appreciated.

Did well on them in Manitoba with a Rainey's dk green #10 booby, they liked that thing a lot, hit it nice and hard.

They are actually sold in Cabelas in the bulk fly bins and distributed from Superfly. Three colors Olive/Black, Purple/Black and White/Purple. J |
Muddler minnows and rolled muddlers have worked well for me for Alberta tigers

I'm still pretty new to the stillwater game, so any tips would be appreciated. |

I have been using a clear intermediate line with a leader length of 6-8 ft. Generally not fishing very deep, usually works best early morning and late afternoon to evening when the big tigers, browns and rainbows are cruising the shallows / shoals looking for prey. Tigers are very Piscivorous as are browns. Big rainbows can't turn down a baitfish meal neither. Fished rolled muddlers for sea run cuthroat lots as a kid on the island suprisingly they are a killer pattern in our pothole lakes. |

Flies foe Tiger Trout
Thanks for the kind words guys, yes the DDH works for just about any species of fish. With that said the is another couple of patterns to use for Tigers. Are you ready: A foam mouse (here in Manitoba we nick named it Mickey) and a small black Bass popper. No I am not nuts, these two flies work extremely well for the Tigers here and we do take some 25 inch plus on them. It is a riot and you have to try it.
