what are your experiences with the Savage 24 o/u rifle/shotgun and what caliber and gauge? I hunt in an area good for deer and grouse.

There's but one option I'm aware of that'll cover off both scenarios.
30/30-20ga.

I have a 22 magnum over 3in 410... great gun for grousse, I really like this gun

I had one for a bit - a 22/20. Know that this is not the calibre combo you are looking for but some general observations...

Got it used with a known light primer strike issue

After tearing it down and reassembling probably 30 times I sorted the primer strike issue.

It also had issues with the ejector getting struck and not ejecting properly.

Barrel selector decided to split in half and replaced that as well

Rear sight was cheap and front sight was a horrible block affair. Shooting gophers was a pain and I juts went back to the irons on my 10/22

All in all I love the concept but couldn't get over the cheapness of these guns, their finicky nature, and poor sights.

Note that the 22 barrel will not fit standard claw mounts.

They had a 30-30/12G as well

The best one for grouse and deer is the model 24v series B which is the 30 30 and 20gauge o/u,i had two years ago and came close to buying one a week ago,but the condition was not worth the high price,great bush gun for all around bush hunting.They were well made.I didn't see the need for the 12 gauge,you can carry slugs and 30 30,plus bird shot with a 3 inch 20 gauge chamber.

Own a 22/410. It's great for grouse and yard pests. Well made, accurate, and not had a single problem with it. If I found a 3030/20 in good condition, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

You will be hard pressed to find one nowadays as they are discontinued. Savage now has the Savage Model 42 which comes in .22LR over .410 or .22WMR over .410 and its not even close to the same robust quality of the old model 42.

I own a 24 in a 22mag/20 gauge. Great little grouse gun. My only dislike is the 8+lb trigger on it.

Typical Savage back then. The 99’s always had a heavy trigger for the most part...

I've got a 30-30 over 20 gauge, spent a couple years trying to find one and bought the first one I found even though it was a little rough around the edges, I still like it though, the previous owner put a scope rail on it but the iron sights are still usable with nothing mounted. I've been meaning to do a full restoration on it but haven't had time yet.
It's a great all propose bush/adventure gun, perfect for exploring.

I tracked one down last year from a gentleman on here after I made a looking for post. I had one as a kid and it was great, and the one I got last year is great too. I love them!

I have a Voere 222/20 gauge. If you ever get a chance grab it. It is far superior to any savage I have handled.

I wanna know how you legally hunt deer in Alberta with the .222?

Kinda throws a flag on the OP's criteria.

Have always wanted a combo gun for deer and grouse.

I ended up with a model 92 in 38/357. Light Load 38’s are great for chicken and rabbit. Hot 357 loads can be used for deer out to 100 yards.
That’s another option.
Can’t hunt migratory or go wing shooting but great for grouse at 20 yards and less. It’s just a big ole 22:)

I have a Savage 2400 in 12ga/308 and it is a great little gun.They were made by Valmet in Finnland in the 70s and if you can find one grab it quick.I also have a savage four tenner insert tube so I can shoot 410s in the 12ga barrel making it even more versitle

I have a 24 Series F in .22/20gauge. I like it for hunting grouse and it comes apart easily to fit in the quad box.

I am still looking for a .22/20 with the release lever on the side of the action instead of the tang. My grandfather had one and I always wanted one like it. If anyone runs across one, let me know.

Don’t know about others, but my 24 had a brutal trigger which I got worked down to about 4-5 lbs pull.

Did I say I hunt deer with it?

The two 30-30 -20ga guns I had were both junk..crude machining......neither had the barrels regulated within a yard of each other at 30 yards.The only one that is made correctly is the .22/.410 with the side selector button.Your mileage may vary.Harold

I have a 30 30 x12 gauge. The barrels shoot to the same place. The action would pop open every time i shot 30 30. I put another pliunger spring alongside the spring that holds the action closed now i can operate the swing lever to open it in only one direction but it doesnt pop open any more. The design looks totally farmer brown. Trigger is heavy. Gun is heavy. I liked the idea of it but i rarely use it

Savage 24 or the Chiappa o/u
 

Has anyone tried the Chiappa and/or compared it to the Savage? I saw a Three barrel gun/rifle from the USA it is rare and much more expensive than either the Savage or the Chiappa.

My experience is with a 22 over 20 ga,

The iron sights stank so I added a scope on quick release mounts.
Now its great except the trigger is a little to heavy

I have a Chiappa Little Badger (.22 single shot). The trigger is great and the fact it folds in half makes it easy to pack around. The sites are pretty bad though, with the rear sight moving too easily making it necessary to double check it every time before you shoot. I’ve thought about putting a small reflex sight on it, but most quality sights cost more than the gun did.

I have owned and shot many Savage 24s. They are fine guns with a little work on the triggers, the new production 42s not so much. I have a Baikal in 22/20 gauge and had another in 308/12 Gauge. Both are well made rifles, good adjustable open sights and well setup for scope mounting, with decent triggers for about $800 each. They will do the job very well and the barrels are well regulated.

The best guns I have used for multi purpose hunting are Drillings. 12x12 or 20x20 over 7x57R , 308 or something similar. They are quite a bit more money, $3500 and up, but they are great fun to shoot and very competent at being an all round one gun for all hunting.
