What is the proper way to dispose of a deer carcass?
Buddy and I processed a deer for the first time this weekend and it raised the question for us as to what is the best way to get rid of the bones and unusable meat? Also, what about the skin and head? Anyone have any thoughts?...keep in mind we are in the city so we can't bury it out back or anything.

I'm sure there are many opinions out there but I usually take a little drive (well away from any homes and off the side of the road) and and dump it in the trees. The critters take care of it in no time.

In Calgary, one of the landfills has a designated area for carcasses. Check with your City's information department.

Dump it near "nature" ... coyotes and birds love it.
|
Be careful if you go dumping it in "nature" if a near by farmer, land ownder, or rancher see you, you'll probably get a butt chewin and be reported

Properly
double bag in plastic bags and put out for garbage disposal to p/u is the proper way here in Edm. I usually don't put it out until the morning on the day they p/u, (and they usually p/u at about 8:00 at my place) to prevent any birds or strays getting after it. Wouldn't want to traumatize poor little Suzy walking home from school when a stray goes running by dragging a spine etc.......

I like to take my remains a fair ways down a back road and give them the heave ho where the coyotes and ravens can take care of it away from anywhere someone would have a legitimate complaint about the temporary mess. Here in slave some people are so lazy they dont even drive out of town, just ditch the animal in the industrial park or behind the ball diamonds, dont do this.
Ps. a leg bone left out in the yard for a few days can make for some fun entertainment watching your dog try to protect his prize from the persistant magpies. Magpies are actualy much smarter than most dogs and use some clever team plays. |
I actually called fish and wildlife about this for the moose I got this year I asked if there was any designated areas for dumping caracases the lady actually said to go dump it on private land you have permission on or crown land ....I found this odd as protocol.

How about the deer skin? What should a guy be doing with that?

disposal of carcasses
I try and dispose of the carcass close to where I shot the deer with landowner permission of crse. I take the time to make sure it is off any road or trail and ideally an area I can call coyotes in!
Mainly I go to the effort due to the fact that I live in a CWD area. The heads go to the CWD freezers and the carcasses should go back to where the deer was taken to limit spread of CWD. The chances might be remote but not worth taking in my books. |
Great thread Tbar. I was wondering the same thing. I live in a townhouse right now and was thinking it might not be the greatest idea to put it in the community dumpsters. I was going to double bag it, but it still could be messy with all the magpies around. We just bought a house, so I think I'll throw them in the freezer until I have a few and then go to Shepard landfill.

Disposal
We just keep the bones head and hide, put it in a box and take it back out to the crown land the next weekend and dump it in the bush and bring the box back. Now my dads neighbors dogs eat the scraps but we still take the hides and head back the next trip out. Gives the birds some food before winter.

Bones go to buddy's dog. Hides go here, you may win a great prize.

There are lots of us that feed our dogs a raw food diet that would be happy to take a good portion of your unwanted carcass! My dogs are very happy to eat neck/spine, ribs, pelvis, scapula, as well as organs and scrap meat....and old freezer burned or dried out meat that has been forgotten in the bottom of a freezer for a year or two is also great dog food :) Anyone in Calgary that wants to drop old meat/bones off at my house is welcome to any time, as long as it is not rotten!

Crown land.... Simple..

I'm in Morinville but my stomping grounds cover a relatively large area north and west of the city. :) |
HunterDave, here's hoping and praying I'll have something to send your way when this weekend is up! :)

Just went to the Sheppard landfill with A deer carcass. There is no more free carcass disposal there. I paid 15 bucks and I am not too happy about it.
