Spring fever.....show us your .22 gopher rigs!

The little bucktooths will be up soon, hang in there!

Here's my Savage MK2 BRJ.

Edit: pics won't load.

No gophers where I’m at but my small game gun is a Savage MK II as well, SS Laminate thumb hole stock with a Bushnell legend 3-9 on top. I currently have no pictures of it though but I love the rifle.

Anyone have any tests comparing minimag hollowpoints vs minimag copper round nose? Does the hollowpoint even make a difference?

On gophers hollow points ALWAYS make a difference, if you find one your gun likes

CCI mini mags work best in my .22 rifles
Test your .22 at 100 yards and the winners will quickly rise to the top

Here are the two I use:

The left one is a Savage Mark II BTVSS with a rifle basix trigger set at 22oz. Pillared, bedded, 6-18x40 AO scope, loves Eley shells

The right one is a Savage Mark II BSEV, 3-9x40 3500 Bushnell, is pretty decent with the red box super X. This scope will be changed out for a AO scope soon.

My rimfires are a plain ol' 10/22 and a CZ 455.

I have no pictures at the moment but both my son and I, as well as my normal hunting partner are all using Remington 597 heavy barrels. My son and I have Pursuit "tactical" 3-9 scopes, my buddy is using a Tasco pencil thin scope. I'm hoping to break him of that scope and actually get something into the 1980's, even a Bushnell rimfire scope will be better than he's using.
I also have a 10/22 that will be slated for the wife, unless it sells. Once it sells then she will be sporting a 597 decked out like ours. She likes the feel of them better and they just plain work.
My other 22 is another semi. It's a Mossberg 151K. It needs some love but it still shoots. It was my grandmothers rifle. They were produced for less than a year in the 1950's from what I can find.

The other buddy we bring out has Chinese bolt 22 that is quite the shooter. He also just purchased the fancy Savage 17HMR. The one with the twist fluted barrel and the red/pink wood rain thumb hole stock. That thing is fun to shoot.

Is that BSEV a 22wmr?

Here’s my main three with a new addition included. From top to bottom.

CZ 455 .22WMR Varmint Thumbhole, Leupold 4-12x40 AO Fine Duplex, Rifle Basix Trigger set to 20 oz.

New member. Ruger 77 .22WMR. It will be wearing the exact same scope as described above. I still need to do some honing to smarten up the trigger. Or do a replacement. Need to decide.

Ruger 77 .22 Hornet, same Scope as above. Factory trigger has been worked by Dave Henry and breaks at 2lbs even.

Browning A-Bolt .22 Hornet. It wears a VX3 2.5-8x36. I replaced the trigger weight of pull spring. Can’t recall the manufacturer but it’s really nice. Breaks right around the 2lb mark as well but I believe a tad under. Yes, that’s a Limb Saver on it for crying out loud. What can I say? On a high volume day wearing a t-shirt it’s a lot less abrasive than the factory plate. I got a pile of factory ammo with this rifle and I’m almost to the end so I started working up a load. 35gr V-max over 12.8gr Lil Gun at 1.725” COAL is papering 0.74” 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

Will be working on loads for the 77 Hornet soon and hopefully I find one I can run double duty in both Hornets.

The 455 really likes the CCI Maxi Mags in 40 gr JHP.

Very nice, just wondering which one do you think you use the most?

Well, I'm a traveling gopher-shooter...but heading back to AB this coming spring. :) My main gopher gun is a CZ452 Varmint shooting CCI Blazer 22 I run through the Waltz Hollow-point die. Time consuming, but YES...hollow points make a remarkable difference. The CCI Blazer is an OK gopher slayer as is...but devastating when a gaping hollow point is added. Here is is in a spot I sat for nearly an hour...plugging away as fast as I could load the mags;

https://i.imgur.com/PJy3WHu.png

Typical, post-impact effect of these HPs on gophers. They're a "Bang/flop" proposition 99% of the time ;

https://i.imgur.com/HJay0PT.png

The 22 I'm playing with allot these days...and could come along for the ride in 2019 :) ;

https://i.imgur.com/yQXpBdO.jpg

I've spent most of my time putting match-grade ammo through this gun @ 50 yards...but am ordering some high-grade faster stuff to test out too. I haven't put much HV ammo through it all to be honest. Fun shooter, and crazy accurate.

Just curious about if other people notice a difference. Sometimes i think the hollowpoints add damage, other times to round nose seem just as good.

Hollow points definitely do more damage than solid points.

Thank you Bob. It’d be a tie or very close between the A-Bolt Hornet and the CZ for sure. Such a shame for the sake of my 10/22s. I’ve got a couple nice ones that I’m basically keeping for the kids and economy when they are ready for them.

Interesting I did not know they had those in LR. I just got one in wmr. Seems to have feeding issues, often jams when I cycle the bolt, have you noticed this at all?

There is a fix,, just google savage mag feeding issues, its really simple actually.

I’m not at home so no fancy pictures of them all together but my gopher rigs include a little cz452 that’s now wearing a Leupold scope in talley rings.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4ae59da848.jpg

A xcr for the midrange shots.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...df864666f3.jpg

And a browning safari from 1970 with the sako action. It’s shooting 70 grain vld’s through a 1-7” gain twist barrel for the longer range work.

Cabela's has the 1400 rd buckets of 22lr for $85ish on sale, in case you need to stock some before gopher season.

If it has 4 legs and buck teeth I want to shoot it....couple more weeks to load up .223 for the longer pokes.

Absolutely. The terminal impact is very visible. I would never shoot gophers with a solid point just because they ricochet so bad. The big hollow point on the Xpert or the CCI fragmented still skip occasionally but not near as often as the solids. The hollows kill way cleaner too.

Try 12.6 of LilGun in WW or Privi brass with Fed Small pistol primers and 40 grain VMAx or Blitzkings. About 3100 FPS. IF RP brass you will need another .3 grains of powder. My browning will shoot those into .75" at 200 yards, as will the CZ and a number of other Hornets I have tried the load in. In fact I would go so far as to say if your gun won't shoot that load under an inch at 200 yards there is something wrong with the gun or the shooter.

The 35 grainers shoot good to 100-150 yards then their beach ball shape the accuracy falls apart. The 40 you can consistently hit gophers to 275 yards.

Thanks for the info Dean. I’ll give it a run for sure. All I’ve tried is the CCI 500s for a primer and the 35s are the first pill I’ve tried. I have a serious pile of Prvi brass to play with. I’m honestly just getting into seeing what the cartridge is capable of outside of factory offerings so any nudge in the right direction is appreciated.
