RV On Ice
 

Hi guys, this post is a little bit out there but I'm looking for some insight for a weekend with a few buddies coming up this long weekend.

A few good buds came up with the idea that it would be fun to take a motorhome onto the ice for a couple of days of camping/fishing out with the boys enjoying some well deserved relax-time.

But here's the thing, none of us really get out to any lakes over the winter and we're not sure what access is like on the lakes around Edmonton (2ish hrs). We were planning Amisk near Boyle, but have heard the launch is too steep and even truck access is a challenge. So we're looking for suggestions for easy access for a 40' 2wd DRW motorhome. Good packed snow trails near the access so we don't get stuck. Any thoughts on Long Lake or North Buck?

Don't worry, I can assure you we will minimize angling effort and catch almost zero fish.

Any RV that large is not going to make it on any lake let alone less traveled lakes like the Boyle area. There is way too much snow now. It is up to you but I wouldn't chance it.

I'm skidoo on right now so I'm not even bothering with the 4x4. I'm hitting some of those less traveled lakes and there are no beat down tracks to follow. You best bet would be something like Brownlows at Gull lake but that is probably too messy for an RV as well.

Do any of you guys own a quad with a blade? you could always clear a path through the snow with the quad to make your lives easier. Wabamun would be easy access from the townsite if you cleared the snow and were alright with C&R.

I’d be scared to take an rv out on the snow just cuz I’d hate to see the tow bill to get it off the lake if it got stuck.

Ive got a 4x4 truck and I’ve been walking on in shin/knee deep snow for the last couple weeks.

You may need to go further se and get on a prairie wind swept lake.

Really appreciate the guys comments so far! Thank you. I had a correction from one of my friends that the RV is actually 23' long, maybe make a difference? Driveline is Dual Rear Wheel.

Was on lac ste Anne today snows deep and it was 4 wheel drive everywhere.

I would say ditch the motorhome idea on the lake. Because
If it does snow over night , or if it get windy , you are going to get stuck .
Tow truck companies will not come out on the lake to pull you out.
and anyone that tries to pull you out, will get stuck as you are much heavier.

Best to find a lake that has over night camping on the side ,or
rent a cabin on the lake , like
Lac la biche provincial, or rent a over night ice hunt.
Much cheeper than buying tire chains and a winch.

Take the motor home and park it on shore . Take a 4X4 with you and use that to access the lake of choice.
Long lake might be good for this. Don't know if they would allow you to camp though as it is a provincial park and charge you to camp in the summer months and other spots are day use only. The hills down to the boat launches are long and fairly steep. Wab might be the best place.

I was at N. Buck a few years ago, and with a decent 4X4 you didn't dare leave the trail as the snow was deep enough to get even some lifted 4X4 's stuck. With the warm day yesterday the top layer of snow should have melted a tiny bit and with the cold it will turn hard and easier to get stuck and harder to get unstuck.

In March the snow will be melted some and the lakes will be more accessible for such a trip.

A set of single tire chains placed on the outside duals may make it possible if you have enough clearance under the vehicle. Some of the drifts may be 2 feet deep or more.

Ice fishing Sylvan Lk 101 is rocking, the snow is deep and it's frozen solid.

The 10x12 shack with wood heater is the bestest. LOL

I made that word up to put a kink in the AO spelling police.

Thanks for the tips folks! We chained it up and snow blowed a path. No worries.

The wind made it a little fresh, but we had a blast none the less.

Glad to hear it worked out! Looks like a lot of fun.
