Boat hauling help
 

Tried this over in general, no response. Anyone? I am looking to haul a 15' boat, weight 115lbs and 50" wide. Am thinking roof rack but not sure if the weight is to much for one person. Seems a little light to get a trailer for though. No motor although a 8' set of oars will be traveling with, oh and it's for a 99 Honda CRV. Would like some thoughts please and brand names would be great! Thanks

Probably a little much for one person alone to put up on a roof rack, but two could probably do it.

I've got a 12' tinner that I have on a trailer, and the trailer just makes dealing with it soooooo much more convenient.

there is a winch system that you can install on your truck that loads the boat over the front of the vehicle. I cant remember what it is called but it has been posted on here several times in the past. maybe someone can recall the name? Its a pretty simple system. Not sure if it can be installed on an suv.

I would have to second the trailer idea. So much more convenient.

any excuse to buy (another) trailer is a good one. You will be amazed at the uses you will find for it (and who will want to borrow it). If you have space to store it, i would just get a $700 6x8 from Home Depot.

15 ft is too long for one person to load overhead safely. Get a trailer as suggested by others or get an over canopy automatic boat loader. I have one and it is the best investment I have made!

OK, Thanks guys. So where would I find a cheap boat trailer, was thinking about a utility trailer but I think the boat is to big. Also if I get a trailer I may go up to a 17 ft boat as it is apparently faster to row.

I am 90% sure you would be pulled over if you tied a 15 footer to the roof of your Honda

Several places, Can Tire, Wall mart Home depot sell the Snowbear, you can drop the front and read gates and make it at least 12ft long easy to tie down the boat and more than usefull trailer for lot's of stuff. Cheap too.

LOL...15' boat on a CRV would be so redneck its not even funny...:D

Ok, another problem boat is not aluminum and will get the crap kicked out of it if it's on a trailer. CRV is almost 15' long how bad can it look? By the way the boat is like a very large canoe, styling so to speak. http://www.esquif.com/2008/canot_en.php?id=38

Is a CRV really that long? I would've only guessed about 10'-12' for one of those. I say get yourself a rack, and go hard. If the boat only weighs 115lbs, it should be manageable for one person to get loaded. You just need the right technique is all...

No problem putting that upside down on a snow bear trailer. Best you go check them out for yourself then you will see what I mean by laying the front and back tail gates down.

Home depot doesn't carry them anymore, am trying to locate a dealer in the Hat. Should maybe phone, they may have an unsold one I could get a sweet deal on. :evilgrin:

Saw a snow bear brand at Can Tire on 178th st. in Edmt. on the weekend .

a decent utility trailer ... even its used is well worth having.

only need slight Mods to it to make it into a boat trailer.

Either flip it upside down and strap it to a couple of 2x 4 's or on a
good trailer like the Snow Bear... you remove the sides and make
youself a bunk with a few brackets and some good carpet.

I beleive that snow bear ( or maybe another brand ) actually has a
boat conversion kit for their trailers.

Get a trailer and save yourself allot of grief. Hook up and go.

After much angst have decided on 6 or 8 ft utility trailer with the fold out back. 6 will be if I decide on the 15 ft. and 8 if I decide on the 17 ft. boat. I can lock the gate stretched out and make a frame to support the boat in the trailer, may have to hang a set of lights on the back of the boat for travel, we'll see. Then I have a utility trailer that I can use, and pay back some favors. Thanks for the advice and responses, I gave them all a lot of thought and the solution that I came to was something that I would have never thought of. Am getting excited, got to get the wife a pretty dress and umbrella, and a pipe and tweed coat for myself, we will be rowing in style. :sHa_shakeshout:

I use a system almost exactly like the one above to load and unload a 14 foot lund. I do it alone, but it is nice to have help. The boat weighs about 130 pounds. As long as you have a bumper or a hitch on your vehicle it is an effective, safe and inexpensive method to haul a boat.

Wish I took some pictures of my Jeep Cherokee with my 14ft on top (same boat as in picture). A 15ft on a CRV would be even more redneck than mine on the Jeep I think. I made this myself, and could load and unload the boat by myself (not a light boat either).I did the same with my new truck, here is a picture of it on top. And a poor one of the front set up.

I will agree that hooking up to a trailer is much more convenient. It just seems that I am always pulling a trailer as well so it is not an option for me.
