Chip Lake

Anyone been out to chip lake recently? What's the ice thickness like? I'm thinking about heading out that way on Sunday, hopefully catch a few eels.

The ice is 20+ inches we have been catching pike but not one burb has been ice that I know of. Stayed out until 7:30 pm last Sat. Nothing. There is a bunch of trees and stumps in the mouth of the river. Hopefully we will be out again this Sat. nite

I heard they been catching them at Gull, but ive tried until like 7:30 few nights in a row and nothing to speak of just the few pike during the day :(:mad3:

hmm... i see, sounds like i might have to head out to gull then, chip is usually money for burbs this time of year

pickrel pat 02-09-2012 03:21 PM

valve god 02-09-2012 03:52 PM

It is a little early for Chip. The old timers say 2-3 more weeks. Also I talked to a CO and this will be the last year for the limit of 10 burbs for some lakes including Chip

perchie15 02-09-2012 03:56 PM

yeah i hear that there.. not many lakes u can take 10... i better make it out there.. but id only be keep what i can eat for burbot like i always do anyways im not one of them anglers who take everything that they catch :fighting0007:

Was out damn near everyweekend.. only 5 so far this yr. Goin again tonight. The creek mouth is plugged with wood n stuff and the ice is damn near the bottom of the lake at the creek mouth, so im not sure what we are trying tonight.

burbot will pick up in march. and when you find them it can be very easy to limit out. I wont even try for burbot till march hits, even end of march. Good luck and lets see some pics when you get into them.

Andy, we usually just use a jighead tipped with herring or larger smelt.

perchie15 02-09-2012 07:32 PM

cut or whole herring? i was trying to just use the heads but pfft. good luck haha

valve god 02-10-2012 07:29 AM

I use pike belly for bait to catch burbs. I found this out performs smelts and is legal. A 3" strip and also works for pike and stays on the hook longer.:thinking-006:

Parts of Game Fish. Only the skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used as bait, provided these fish were lawfully caught by angling. Skin, fins, eyes and dead eggs of game fish may be used where the use of bait fish is prohibited, but cannot be used where bait bans are in effect. All game fish kept must be counted in the daily catch limit, including any fish from which parts are used for bait.
