top 100 smartest dogs(how does your dog rate?)
i was bored and googled smartest dog and found this. its the top 100 smartest dogs from dumbest to smartest. so how does your dog rate. my boys are number 17 chessies. i was also surprised to see what some dogs rated that i thought were one of the dumbest but got great scores

According to ur list my dog is #4. Ive always wondered how do they tell which breeds are smarter than the other?
Well, our little #6 Sheltie sure outshines the next door neighbour's #92 ranked Beagles. Perfect pooch for this family, and the kids love her. The only downside would be the lack of 'asertiveness'. (Mostly, she can be suprisingly savage when need be, which is nice.) When they describe the breed as, "Eager to please", they ain't kidding! :D
If you're looking for a good family mutt and have young kids, I highly recommend the Shetland Sheepdog.:) |
Abbey Girl comes in at number 7, but she is cute as hell. Jet gave her bad ideas though!
#3 and #6, although some days you can't tell.
Mine come in at 1&3,I think they determine a dogs intelligence by how many commands it can learn.
#1 really stands out to me. Afgans are notorious for being a difficult breed, mostly because humans have been selectively breeding them with a more refined head, leaving less room for brains. Some of the smartest dogs, I've seen, were Mutts.
Grizz |
I am at both end of the scale 5, 98 or 87 as I can tell what the difference might be.
I've got #1 and #18. That border is too smart for his own good sometimes. He's figured out how to pry off fence boards to escape from the yard.
Devastated
At first I was devastated to find that my breed was only one step ahead of an Irish Setter and well behind the Brittany. Then my wife pointed out that she had a list by some scientist that said GSP's were actually #17 ahead of brittany's (19) and led the pointing dog brigade. So now I can rest easy knowing that all is right in the world.:)
The top 10 and bottom 5 are the same on this list as well. It just gets hazy in between. |
My dog is #79 on the list. I don't buy it. He's dumber than that.
My Wife's......I repeat MY WIFE"S dog is #89. I think they were being polite by even putting him on the list.
I've had numbers 10 (blue heeler) and 7 (lab) and now have one that is not on the list but is by far the smartest dog I've had, its a Coton Du Tulear. My neighbor has a Golden Retriever and its the dumbest thing around. The type of pup means more than the breed in a lot of cases.
I guess there's extremes in every breed, LOL!! I've seen some awful dumb (albeit loveable) labs.
No surprise with #1 :D
Here's our guy yesterday. At nine months he's already turning into a pretty solid mountain dog. Today he's off for his first lesson working sheep...domestic that is..:D http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h4...b/DSC_0040.jpg Here we are glassing some goats! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h4...b/DSC_0033.jpg |
Well im assuming that the #7 for labs is post puppy, when they grow there brain, cause at 6 months Charlie really doesnt seem all that bright, she shows potential but thats about it right now.
my yellow lab started to mature at about 2 years-until then she was a lossoe cannon.
i cant believe how low a staffy comes in. some of the smartest dogs ive ever seen. and i really cant believe how high a great dane comes in. there basically just a ******ed small horse arent they?
But once a lab starts getting out of the puppy stupid stage they become much smarter. Mine gets sassy as she learned that from Jet! the infamous black lab from Calgary.
My future dog rated #50 a dachshund.
Intelligence list was derrived by Stanley Coren, author of numerous dog books. He's a psych professor at either UBC or Simon Fraser Univ., can't remember which. Google dog intelligence and you'll see he's written several books about dogs. The dog intelligence book was done by interviewing people like vets, dog handlers/trainers, judges, as well as his experience and techniques/tasks in determining dog intelligence etc.
Cheers |
Well, there must have been some genetic screwup, since the one lab that REALLY comes to mind is 12 years old and dumber than a box of rocks.
Of course, I can't say too much about his owner, either :lol: I love most dogs, I wish I could be owned by one :( |
27 and 32.....not horrible but not great either..take after me i guess haha

Have owned a Brittany #3 and German Shepherd #11
Where are the folowing breeds Bouvier (have owned 2 ), Nova Scotia Duck Toller, Portuguese Water Dog? Was listening to the Westminister Dog Show once and a Dandie Dinmont Terrier #68 came up and the announcers said that a sack of potatoes was easier to train then this breed. |
wouldn't all these dogs have to be trained by the same trainer in order to make the results consistent??....not very scientific this list LOL
