Auger problem.

I have a Jiffy White lightining. It usually worked good. But today for some reason the auger stoppped turning when it was alomost throught the ice. I notinced that I left it on half choke, would that have caused it to do that?

Posable motor not getting enough rpm to turn auger try it again with choke off.

harrydude 01-08-2012 06:48 PM

Did it restart?

Were are you located?

How thick was the ice?

mooseknuckle 01-08-2012 06:49 PM

When that happens usually you just need to back off a bit, even pull up slightly.the choke being on even slightly may have been bogging it down a bit. Happens to mine if I don't let it warm up for a minute or so.

Open up the small screw on the gas cap ,to let air in the tank !

Thundercatcher 01-08-2012 10:31 PM

there is no screw in the gas cap. It has small pinhole vents in the cap

livetoflyfish 01-08-2012 10:45 PM

Ive got a jiffy and noticed that it can bog down if I don't let it warm up. Give it a minute or so to run in idle before you burn holes.

sureshot 01-08-2012 11:17 PM

Get rid of it and buy an eskimo.

Could be one of several things - old age, bad memory, etc.

After it warms up for a minute or so, take the choke off.

yeahright 01-09-2012 12:53 AM

the ice is getting harder this time of year.... my eskimo z71 aint chewin like it used to..... and its right new... and still a dream

but watch for the double clutch slippage... new augers trannys need a break in period... if the motor runs and the blade doesnt spin. just turn it off.. and restart.... dont bag it. warm it up

says it in the books that clutch slip may happen in first 2 hours of breakin...

Wait you bought a jiffy... . they dont come with manuals?

fish gunner 01-09-2012 01:12 AM

poor guy at pine lake last yr im sure blew the trany first hole all the way down tryed to help for a few min told him to get a chain saw oh I know what i forgot it was red and said eskimo on the side. not laughing really im not!!

How many holes did you dig and have this problem with?

Sometimes it helps to play around with it a little...dig a couple more holes, adjust the choke (you shouldn't need it on once it's warmed up) and see what happens...y'know...troubleshoot.

Typically it'll get a little stuck when you're breaking through the bottom of the ice. Lift up the auger just a bit (so it's not biting in) and then lower it again while giving it some gas and it should chew through.

Try new blades - you will be surprised. I thought I bought a bad set for replacement blades (really rough factory edge) but my z71 is back to chewing right through. I guess 100's of holes through dirty prairie ice took its toll on the old blades

There are two scews on the side of the Carb.

The one on the right is the high speed setting.

It determines the power ratio / Fuel when the unit
is under load.
Once you get it set up properly the unit will run fine.

One word of caution. Anything works great in the garage !!

the proper way to set these AV520 Tech. motors is under load
on the ice ... drilling.

Here it is in a nut shell.

Gently turn it in so it is just closed all the way .

turn it back out 3/4 to 5/8 of a turn.

this is your baseline/ starting point. use 1/8 turns either
way to fine tune.

If your having problems after this ... send me a PM and we
can talk about it.

I have a few Carb kits left for the Tech. carbs and one pager instructions
on how to set'm up. .... for Forum Members .

Your welcome !

FishingFrenzy 01-10-2012 08:04 PM

Just curious.. why would you get a new gas cap???? What was wrong with the old one??? Unscrew the vent sure, but get a new cap?????

If you read he said it was not a screw vent it was a pin vent they work off pressure and was not working apparently.

I just finished reading through this thread and I have to admit there is some interesting advise. I think Jiffy 10 nailed the technical advise but maybe all you need to do (which was mentioned a couple of times) is lift up on the auger to allow the blades to turn and slowly (under control) slowly allow the blades to bite until your thru. I own two augers both are jiffy's. It's pretty common to bog out just before you hit water.

Jack&7 01-10-2012 09:42 PM

Not to hijack the thread from the OP, but it is a related question:

Where do you get a replacement screw for the vent cap? Mine seemed to have vibrated out...

I have a screw with the right threads in it right now...but it is way too long. I can replace the screw, but where do you get the little tension spring to go with it?

Try a spring from a pen?

harrydude 01-11-2012 06:20 AM

That's a great idea
