Bringing out the kid to do some plinking this weekend
And was wondering what you guys use for targets, Bringing out the bag of old cans and some paper targets What are your go to plinking targets ? |
Buck tooth rodents...

Ballons
Golf balls Solo cups and food colouring and water |
Prop up up clay pigeons in the dirt
|
Milk jugs full of water.

We've had fun with the dye filled paper targets, and the kids love the zombie look stuff too.
I have a brand new clay thrower I can't wait to get out with, and I had the idea of using damaged clays (not on the ground because of richochet possibilities!), on a cheap piece of plywood with a few finishing nails to hold them flat? Good way to use any that come cracked or chipped in the case? |
Balloons! Cleanup is annoying though. Bring a rake.
|
Urban rabbits or cats.....joking. My boy and I built a quick frame out of 2x4 and plywood. Stands 3ft off the ground. Top is flat to hold milk jugs. Middle has the plywood for targets (easy to find the zombie ones online and print) the bottom has screws from which we hung old softballs and shot at those. Was fun to try to hit a moving target.
Also a fun one: grab a few clothes pins and a deck of cheap playing cards at the dollar store. hot glue the clothes pins together. glue a popsicle stick down the side for extra support. Put a card in each clothes pin. Use it with the cards facing you to try and shoot the spades/hearts/ etc out of each card or turn it sideways and try to shoot the card in half. Make a few as one shot to the clothes pins does some good damage. Have fun. |
Portable ladder golf frames with pretty much anything you can hang on them (including ladder golf balls).
Tennis balls, dog chew balls (more sturdy than tennis balls), all kinds of rubber balls. Golf balls are most reactive of all. Water-filled containers. Clay targets. |
We used to tape Necco candy wafers to a string and hang them up. Very challenging, especially if there is a bit of a breeze. Bonus is the candies are biodegradable just remember to take the strings with you when your done.

The guy I just bought my newest rifle from, makes these in his spare time...
They look like great little "flipping" targets, and the resettable hangers look nice too ! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y72...psq5tsz5k2.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y72...psytsihnoo.jpg |
Rice crispies! Buy a bag or two or three, shoot, them, birds will eat the remains!
|
Jumping Jacks. :) Somewhat like JOHN_R1's first picture. I had a Hutterite buddy make some for me and sold a few at gunshows. :)
|
Got the metal ones you shoot they go up and hang then shoot the reset target and your back at it again but I got to say the most fun I have is drilling a holes through golf balls, run a line through then and hang them off a horizontal beam or whatever you come up with, shoot, hit them and they spin around the beam etc, lots of fun. Make it challenging back out the distance, shoot rested and free hand:sHa_shakeshout:

Saltine crackers always work good and when those become too easy cheese nips and ritz are next.

I go one step further I put Red Food Coloring/Dye in the water and make it blood red, just love the pink mist it makes when the jug explodes! |
I just picked these up last weekend. They had/have them on sale in store for $35 I think it is. It was just bonus that I had reward points. There is only one review on them and his biggest beef was that the sticker will get shot off. You get the set of three and the ground stakes.

We shoot cattails, inexpensive, reactive, renewable and no clean up...

We had about 30 2l pop bottles filled with colored water last year, and the kids enjoyed that. Better though is any kind of melons or cucumbers with the 40gr ballistic tips. Porcelain is not bad, but a real mess to clean up.
|
I have a silhouette set of targets that are challenging(especially those little chickens), reactive, and reusable. I also use the 5 target resetting one. Cans of pink cream soda are fun too.
We use just about anything. Tin cans hung on string, found clays, balloons... Now I want to go shooting but I am on call, next week. |
Cow patties. Chunks come off when you hit them. Great reactive targets.
|
reactive targets
Matador arms reactive targets.

I just bought a 16" AR500 gong from these guys (local)...
Picking it up in a week or so, as it's custom. It'll have the "heart-attack" feature. Range Rabbit dot Com * not the same guy I mentioned earlier... :) |

Reactive targets are best, a pop can full of water is better than an empty one. I remember a long time ago someone saying take bars of soap as one way of showing the power of the rifle and making a child realise they need to use it safely. |
If they're young kids, hard to beat blow-up balloons staked to the ground. A bit of a pain to set up, a bigger pain to CLEAN up...but boy do kids like it. Easy to hit, colorful, usually moving a little, nice "pop" sound, etc.
Little kids (in my experience) enjoy a bit of shooting then usually want to move on before long. Balloons? Pretty much will shoot those as long as you're prepared to blow them up, set them up. I used to wear out before the kids did! :) |
We got an Impact Seal 3D Prairie Dog, and my kids love plinking on that thing! Not the cheapest, but it lasts forever, and there is nothing to clean up afterward either.
