Online PAL renewal

My PAL expires in Aug. I've heard online is the fastest way to renew. How picky are they on the picture, size wise and pixels. Has anyone who has taken their own picture versus say a passport photo had any trouble or been questioned about it. Also I guess you just send it as an attachment with your application.

If it isn’t correct it won’t let it upload
So you know right away

I took my own with my iphone
Arms out - camera facing me, plain background
No problems - got my card a month later

RPAL online renewal times

Just wondering what kind of online renewal wait times some of us are experiencing?

I applied online November 18th for a end of February expiration date. Nothing yet.

I did the same thing. No issues

If it expires in August do you have to wait a couple of months still? It says you can do it within 6 months of expiring.

Mine expires in July and I've been waiting so I don't get any runaround to deal with, not doing it properly. I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not renewing it early?

Mine expires 3rd week of October, and I just did my online renewal. (RPAL & have restricted’s + am an instructor)

That’s giving them nearly 10 months, and I’d suggest everyone else do something similar.

Unless something has changed, we used to be able to apply, any time within 12 months of expiry, so I apply as aoon as I am within 12 months of expiring.

Thanks fellas. And thank you Mark, didn't realize it would kick the picture if the site doesn't like it's size and whatnot. Will try it in the next few days.

No problem
I just did mine as well
I got a passport picture taken at Walmart and it wouldnt let me take a picture of the picture
It made me redo my own picture with my phone like 10 times too lol

fishnguy 01-06-2023 03:58 PM

I took one selfie against off-white wall from just below the shoulders and it worked just fine.

I want to get my pic done this weekend before I shave my beard. I try to make them look as silly as I can

AMA will take a free pic if your a member.I got my PAL back today.I applied through the mail, took around 3 months. Had issues with the online app, gave up on it.

urban rednek 01-06-2023 05:21 PM

Photo concerns? Easy, just resize the .jpeg to meet the requirements shown on the upload page.
Right mouse click on the photo- Edit- Resize- choose pixel- enter the numbers you want in the horizontal and vertical boxes- OK- Save (or Save As to keep the original file in place)- done.
eg. my original photo was 1932 x 2576 pixels at 1.14MB, which was too large to submit. I resized it to 966 x 1288 pixels at 372KB, no problem. Had to do the same with the wife's photo.

The other concern is to make sure the photo is clear, with no shadows to obscure your face.
Best to submit your PAL/RPAL renewal as soon as you are allowed, which is 364 days prior to the expiry date.

Savage Bacon 01-06-2023 05:29 PM

I missed the thing about 364 days. The only thing I saw was if it expires within 6 months, and something about November 2017, or something like that.

So that's good to know now.

Mine expires in the summer. Just renewed it today. Took five minutes online.

nast70 01-09-2023 09:16 AM

I did my renewal May 31'22, my PAL expired in August. It's still pending.

Does being an instructor help speed up the process?

You should be calling someone.

I have, several times. They are experiencing higher than normal call volumes. That excuse is wearing a bit thin now.

Did you do it by mail or online?

That is beyond ridiculous at this point, they could increase the capacity of the system, to allow people to comply with their legislation but they choose not to. A person would have to be pretty naive to believe that the backlog is not by design, to make it difficult for firearms owners. One good thing about being on a range executive, is that we have always been able to contact the Alberta CFO in short order, even outside of normal business hours.

Same story here. talked to the Alberta CFO and she said you have a six month grace period (from expiry). Seems like there are orders from on high to make life as miserable as possible for honest, law-abiding, sports persons. IMHO.

You need to actually talk to someone.

Exactly. Hard to do for some people who work during the day and can’t stay on hold indefinitely.

My son (who works in construction) was able to get through on one of his sick days. In his case two things had happened - The process took so long that the credit card used for payment expired. Also, the cost had gone up, so it was waiting for payment. The whole process has taken over a year.

The web portal didn’t have any information about this, nor did it provide an opportunity to update the payment information due to the type of application.

Thankfully the agent whom he contacted was able to clear it up and was very professional and helpful. It’s in the Alberta CFO’s office’s hands now. [emoji846]
