Decap as a separate step?
What’s your process, do you decap as a separate step or size and decap at the same time?

Decap as a separate step and clean up primer pocket.

Decap as a separate step for sure if wet tumbling with stainless steel pin media. Best way to clean primer pockets.

I decap with the resizer die. Is there any advantage to decapping in a separate operation?
|
The reason l decap as a separate step and to refresh my memory as to why l do it l turn to my reloading bible "Handloading for Competition" by Glen Zediker. He states that "some dies develop terminal conditions of destroying primer punches" as one reason and the second is that it keeps the primer residue out of the press. I enjoy reloading so this separate step may add a bit of time however it is not that big of a deal. Good luck

Decap, clean, resize
Keeps the dies and press clean |

Used one of these and a Lee handprimer (as it was faster) for quite a while, I've used with cartridges it was not intended for also.

Personally, I resize and decap at the same time then clean. I don't love my brass or dies enough for the extra step. |

Decap 1st
I always decap first for a few reasons. I want everything nice and clean before it goes through my die. By decaping first and then cleaning I believe I get a better clean in the tumbler. I think I get a better feel when sizing if there is no potential hang up of decaping.

Some interesting preferences regarding decap operations. As previously mentioned, I decap with my sizing die during the resize operation. Prior to the FL reresize operation, I wipe any loose carbon off the neck and (sparingly) lube the case body (often I only lube every 3rd or 5th case). I typically clean the inside of the die about every 500 rounds but have never noticed any issue related to the inside of the die actually being dirty. I also clean out the shellholder periodically (maybe every 500-1000 rounds) which should be the area that could get contaminated with residue when the primer is removed. The shell holder does collect a bit of color in the lube that seems to collect on it, but I don’t recall an issue with any particles slipping into the rim channel...which could cause an issue. I guess the debris fall through the hole in the shellholder.

If they are tight in my chamber I then lube and bump the shoulders back. In a seperate die. I have a forrester CO Ax press so it is very clean and I dont worry about primer crud. I also use an ultrasonic cleaner and it gets the primer pockets very clean with minimal work. To each there own. |
I decap with the sizing die and walnut tumble afterwards. I don't touch the primer pockets other than make sure there is no media in the flash hole.

Kind of depends on the accuracy I want.
Hunting. FL size and load F-Class.....about 20 steps, first one being universal decapping die. |
